Here we go a debate .. what do you think.


I found this on msn news ... what are your thoughts on the subject.

Carrying a few extra kilos? Turns out, they could help you live longer.

A recent study by the Japanese Health, Labour and Welfare Ministry has shown that people who are overweight at 40 are more likely to live longer than other body shapes. It might seem counterintuitive, but thin people actually had the shortest life expectancy, on average.

The researchers studied 50,000 people over a period of 12 years, and looked at how long they lived past the age of 40. While thin women (those with a BMI of less than 18) lived 41.79 years past 40, obese women (BMI of 30+) lived 46.02 more years. Women of regular weight lived a further 47.97 years.

The link between body size and longevity is a bit of a mystery, but the researchers have suggested that thin people are reducing their life span by smoking.

I don't think so, but if you were overweight, smoked and practised unsafe sex then you could be in strife - especially if your better half found out you were smoking........
Mate of mine who has a 15 year old daughter when told she was going to get a new sister or brother told her mother "Oh MUM you won't even let me smoke"

I would never try to justify my excess weight. I hate it, do what I can to control it, and I'm failing dismally.
I may live longer, but I'd like to live longer thinner and fitter.
Despite a low fat, high fibre diet with some exercise my waist keeps expanding to the point where my stomach now beats my feet to the destination. When I go to bed at night I am not alone. My stomach lies next to me, but it's not the company I prefer.
Middle-aged spread or whatever, I don't like it. I'm trying desperately to lose the weight and maintain some fitness within my lifestyle, but I'm losing the battle.
More donuts and coffee are not the answer. Cheers Chris

A part of the AA prayer, is to accept things that cannot be changed, you and several million people are in the same boat, and for me personally I like cuddley women,
Have you ever thought that if you succeed you wont be as happy as you are now cause you will be struggling to maintain the weight loss,

In my vast experience (lol) I have come to the conclusion that if and/or when you can accept yourself for what and who you are your life is so much more serene.  Love me for me, not what you want me to be.  What you see is what you get, warts and all.

Thanks everyone. I feel like I'm the subject of a mutual admiration society with a personal trainer.
You are all absolutely correct. "If someone doesn't like me as I am, they won't like me as someone else".
It's all the media's fault! The pressure is tremendous. The pressure to eat everything from KFC and McSomeone, chocolate, but it has to be low fat. The pressure to be skinny to be happy and healthy.
I'm generally a very happy person, who's not happy about her gut beating her feet to the destination.
Ah, but she'll be righ! Doesn't matter!
I can still laugh at life, and that's a good thing. Smile everyone, it may never happen. Chris

Hello Chris,
I hear your frustration, and offer this info. Last November I stumbled across an article suggesting excessive fructose might be the baddie in our food. My background has been in nursing and education, and my interests have always been in better health for a better life. These did not help me avoid weight gain, despite self discipline. After some further research and purchasing and reading a book titled Sweet Poison by David Gillespie ( a Brisbane based author) , I'm now convinced there is merit to his theory; one being supported internationally by others in the nutrition field. Since November I've attempted to follow the basic principle of limiting fructose intake as much as possible, and have had impressive results in loss of weight, and reductions in blood pressure, triglyceride & cholesterol levels. All this has happened without dieting, ie limiting food intake, and also without increasing exercise levels. I know of that book and the author. Have heard him talk many times on the subject. I fully agree with his findings (not that I have a weight problem).

So simple and worth a try for those that have a weight problem. His historical facts add extra weight (sorry no pun intended) to his findings

Give it a try, is all I can say


edit to say, it is worthwhile for all, in my opinion, to take note of - very healthy for all

Hi Ma!

Reluctant as I am to open cans of worms, the information in Sweet Poison may be just too important not to share.  Basically, David Gillespie's research suggests that we are being poisoned by an addiction to fructose, in that metabolically it bypasses the body's natural appetite supressors, leading us to want to eat more and more - this might ring a bell for anyone with a 'sweet tooth'.  Fructose is turned into fat in our body; it's like eating fat that your body can't detect as being fat.  

Fructose is the sugar in fruit - it also makes up 50% of cane sugar.  It is being used by food manufacturers in vast quantities. In the space of 150 years we have gone from eating no added sugar to more than a kilogram a week.  The 'natural' sugar in one glass of unsweetened fruit juice per day for a year is enough to add just over 2.5 kilos to your waistline.

The more sugar we eat, the more we want.  Food manufacturers exploit our sugar addiction by lacing it through 'non-sweet' products, such as bread, sauces, soups and cereals.  Our sugar consumption is now the greatest health scourge of our time, and it's all about money.
"Sweet Poison" explores the why's and wherefore's, and importantly offers how to identify and avoid fructose.

sure does Marg and thanks.  The mind boggles though whe you think of all the things we consume with sugar.  Even a bread and water diet has sugar.   LOL.   and the water is debatable as to how safe that is too nowadays.  I will certainly have a look at the site and get me a copy of the book.  Anything that helps with the "fluffy" image is a bonus.  Thanks again

Mate of mine who I swim with Bob the Builder (guru should know him to they hang out at the same RSL) got read the riot act by Dr and told to cut out the fruit, he was eating tooooooooo much and he has lost 5cm from his waist, naturally I'm on his diet now and will be soon looking for a spare pair of socks to put in my Budgie Smugglers.........
