Sleeping with Pop Top Down

Can anyone tell me if it is safe enough to sleep with the Pop Top down...sometimes I just want to have a night stop over and dont want to put the top up...but am unsure if it is safe  to leave the top down all night while sleeping...( I do want to wake up) ..would there be enough air space...I know this might seem a thick question but hey I wont know if I dont ask ..solo traveller most of the time( I dont open the windows in my van ...saves having leaky windows.
thanks again happy travelling

sorry I can't answer your question Re" sleeping with pop top down but can anyone tell me if we should leave the top popped in the up position when it is in "storage" with a protective cover over it?

Hi Katrina,
I have a Pop-top campervan, and if I'm not planning on staying longer than overnight,
I don't bother putting it up, and haven't had a problem yet.  I open the side window,
although if it rains I shut it. Me and 2 little dogs have plenty of air.
Cheers,
xina.

Hi Katrina .. I used to drag my Jayco Poptop everywhere, and it went through many a storm etc .. and if it looked like squally type of rain, I'd freqently drop the lid down .. Never had a problem except occasionally waking up at night to go outside .. and bumping the old scone .. else .. its quite stable and safe ..

I don't see a problem sleeping with the lid down, Likewise storing your poptop with the lid down is best but try and leave a vent open so that some air can circulate, the Vynl will oxidise faster than the aluminium in the weather.

Guru and Ma,

I store mine in the open (no option) with the pop top down, but leave the hatch levers unlatched so the seal doesn't become compressed and fuse to the body in heat etc. I was given this tip by other pop top users. Don't forget to lock latches for travel though. I don't use a cover but many do. There is some ventilation through the door vent and the wall vent near the stove, other than that I don't worry about it, although on a fine day do pop the roof and leave the door open occasionally.

Escape,

Regarding sleeping in the van, I have done so on occasions in blustery weather and also at rest areas having a "nana nap", enroute, seems ok, and you should be getting some ventilation from the door vent and wall vent near the stove.

We had a pop top campervan and if it was really windy we would sleep with the top down no problems only trouble is as already said if you get up don`t forget to duck. Safe travelling. Helena.

Katrina,

I should have mentioned, if you are not on a powered site (or free camping etc), if you are running your fridge on gas overnight make sure you have a window open partly when you have the gas running or if not using gas make sure it is turned off securely at the bottle.  Also just in case of gas leaks.

Years ago, a father and his son were down the south west of WA in winter in a campervan (can't recall if it was a pop top and whether up or down), they had the fridge on gas and either from the burnt gas fumes or a gas leak they both died from asphyxiation.  I can't recall all the details now, it was some time ago.

Vic

PS:  Regarding your following post, as our member Rolly says in his signature, the only stupid question is the one not asked.

Forgot about the Gas. My fridge runs off Solar, so I didn't think of that.

We often sleep with the top down if it is a quick stay or the weather is bad, as others have allready said. We don't have the problem of bumping our heads as we are both vertically challenged.. LOL

Vic, thanks for the tip on the hatch clasps though, we had not thought of that. Will get Mick to release them when he gets back from Bundaberg at the end of the week.

Cheers
Ellen

No worries Ellen, pays to give he seals a wipe over now and then too so they are kept clean, not the easiest of jobs and you will both need a stool or step ladder by the sounds of it, lol!

Your lucky you got to see them Basil, Arf, Arf, our bus caught fire and burnt out, cut our tour short so we missed most things.......they sent another bus just in time to take us back to the ferry! Refunded our money though!

I knew you were an animal lover Basil.......but have you ever tried kissing a seal? Their breath is worse than mine, and that's saying a lot! Perhaps I don't eat enough raw fish! lol!
