Also the recording can be compressed to Jpeg format, thus more "tracks" per CD, meaning less CDs to take.

I think you mean MP3 format, Yes?
Lets not forget that you can also use these recordings as your mobile phone "ring" tone too.

Sir Basil

How would I know who are aussie singers, and whats a "G&S". Not of an age where I could be wise about this. Is it simple enough to just deal with the one without the tax stamp, believing they are Aussie ones?

Got the box out, for interest, and a quick looked turned up some beuties

"Martial Moments" medley, Concertina Solo, Alexander Prince
"Anvil Chorus",             , Mouth Organ Solo, PC Spouse (champion of aussie)

Now there are some instruments that you do not hear anymore, and a Championship for the mouth organ!!

Eitherway, I will sit down soon and list them for you. Pick and choose

No, rarely heard these days. Of course when they were in vougue men used to whistle their favorite tunes too and a large number of men carried a mouth organ in their pockets, both my grandfathers had one.....And doff their hats to ladies, and give up their seats to others

"Oh Rosemary I love you
I'm allways thinking of you"....

Check the lables, anything made in Australia (78 wise) may be valuable and of historic significance and perhaps after you've got a recording maybe sent to the NFSA...

I found 2 single sided 10" shellac records - Nellie Melba singing home sweet home from 1904. Both are just about dead, will try and salvage some audio. But these are not rare, just interesting.

I remember as a young feller, back when dino still roamed the earth, I was up at the dump and came across a huge box full of 78's all still in their brown paper covers, well me and my mate (willywog ryan) dragged this huge box up to the top of the dump cliff and had a ball for a couple of hours spinning them out in to the void and watching them smash against various objects

they do in actual fact "fly" quite a way, I can hear Basil "sobbing as I write, never mind, we were young and of course we had to entertain ourselves in some fashion,

when we were finished demolishing our history we then constructed a "slide" out of a sheet of iron by pulling the front peice up a little we were able to ride it down the cliff at breakneck speed, I dont know how werent killed or maimed, I would have three types of kittens if my kids had done that
