yep I found that to be true, telstra do also have two models of the same higher quality phone, one is labelled "rural" that is what you must ask for when purchasing a next "g" phone if you are travelling in to remote areas, the "rural" is the one reserved for graziers in the far north and is not always carried by the local telstra branch but can be ordered in at additional cost
the only other way for absolute certainty for communication is of course satelite, highly expensive to purchase and to make a call but it will get out when necesary could save your life

You have to go for the blue tickphones but not all blue tickphones are equal, if you want comms outside the metro areas. Also for an extra $30 you can get an external antenna with a magnetic base which will improve coverage dramatically.

my mobile has just come up for renewal or so nathan from leading edge technology has informed me, I asked about the "r" models (which used to stand for rural) it is replaced by a "blue tick" as Basil has quite rightly pointed out,
also as Basil has pointed out they are not all the same and yes a little cutie 6" arial is available for, in my case, $39.95, he was talking aout a "sticky dot" now I assume this is on the arial and not in any particular part of his anatomy
I am purchasing the motorola v9x which nathan assured me is as good as any phone with a tick once hooked up to the antenae, and I am sure nathan would not lie to a sweet old feller like myself now would he???????? hmmmmmmmmm!!!

yep thats right next "g" not blue tick but the antenny is definately available, nathan is going to drop one off to me this arvo, when I get it I will photomagraph hm and post it, havent seen it yet but nathan wouldnt lie to me, that would kill my faith in the younger generation,
I prefer my old phone, samsung something 550, it's got out in a lot of places and I am not about to tackle the kimberleys or the cooper again so it would do me for years, but as "nathan" says "one moves with technology or gets trampled in the rush" I would much rather stick with what I know
however, nathan did assure me that this model was as good as any blue ticky one on the market once mister anntenny has taken up residence, so we will see, if not well stern words indeed will be forthcoming and some may even be spoken out loud!!!

You can give ppl the ****s real easy with these phones too...... Simple - send SMS messages that are coherent & verbose and it's easy when you plug it into your PC and use the keyboard to compose the message....
I'd dispute it being as good as any blue tick phone SWMBO has BT and hers has far more range than mine.
Certainly a very smart phone tho Dave especially if you want the look of pretense & ostentation that a Blackberry gives you at a fraction of the cost... Can just see you now, wandering aimlessly around Pirie derssed to kill your V9X clamped to your ear while you talk gibberish to some fictious fellow executive......
If I'm not busy on Sat Morning when the T shop is crowded I'll take Gracie along to get her a phone to put in her back pack.... But she will get the Motorola K9, especially for dogs.....

well I got mine this arvo, hell they dont muck around, mine is jet black, yet to see whether the coverage is the same or better but we will see when I whack the iddy biddy hairyall on it
I leave the pretense to other drongoes, not my style, if I get a bit of time tomorrow I'll give Nathan a buzz and see what happened to my hairyall

Nathan may be busy trying to find the bit, mine dosen't have an antenna socket on it only a micro USB connection....
this is the schpiel re the V9X....

Just a word of warnig re mobile phones.... Under no circumstances take compromising pictures of yourself and send the phone away for repair Vis a vis that idiot football player; and NEVER EVER call anyone with a video call as they can see behind you and tell you are at Bunnings when you are sposed to just be buying milk and bread.....

o.k. Nathan has been for a visit and sold me some toys for my new phone (motorola v9x), the itemage includes
(1) patch cable, must buy little sticky useless hairyall to get patch cable
(2) magnetic base 5.0 decibel 7 watt next "g" compatible hairyall
I intend to mount a flat steel plate on to my bullbar and then attach the hairyall's base to that
please note in piccy that there is a little rubber circular plug in the left bottom rear of phone, remove this and a socket will appear, patience Basil, patience it's tiny and doesnt really want to come out, plug the patch cable in there
picture I think will explain more, but nathan assured me (over a cuppa and a couple of my doughnuts, hell he can eat) that this setup will far exceed any blue tick phone
it cost me $209 including an in car charger, but I think it will be worth it in the long run!!!

Motorola v9x died this morning, screen went all snowy and phone ceased to operate, rang Nathan on the work phone, he said "no worries Dave, we will send yours away and it will take 3 weeks to get a repair done"
and I said "no you will bring me a new one this morning",
he said "no we send the old one away, give you a loaner and we get the old one repaired",
I said "no I want a new one to replace my new one which doesn't work any more"
"ah we dont do that",
"listen very carefully Nathan, you are not hearing me, I still have my ten day cooling off period and if I am to wait three weeks for my pretty little new phone I will cease my 25 year relationship with telstra including my home phone and take up a very attractive offer including another pretty little phone with optus, I only want that which I paid for, no more, no less"
I had a new one delivered within twenty minutes of hanging up, why couldn't he have done that in the first place and saved the angst, no coffee and doughnuts for him this time....

So I guess who is still on first base? I'm right pee'd off my stainless steel version has no little plug to remove to expose an antenna socket, must be the executive version....

I had a bit more of a look at my phone and it is a v9x razr2 so I dont know if thats the same as yours Basil
I had to go out to a known phone blackspot (inside the gap) yesterday so I took my hairyall with me, hooked it all up and I got a good strong signal all the way through
the only other time I achieved this was when i had the bagphone

I bought one of these in the tuff 90, and I have a large external aerial, it may not have all the bells and whistles but it does work almost anywhere, very happy with it.
