In the '70's I lived in Melbourne for about 5 years and hated it. Weather, Pollution, Weather, Traffic, Weather, Strikes, but most of all, Weather.  Well, the last week hasn't made me change my mind one bit.

I was planning to leave today anyway, but had planned to do the Great Ocean Road, but I just couln't bear to stay in southern Victoria one more day, so I've headed straight up the middle. Went past Puckapunyal as a memory jogger from my Army days (bugger-all there these days, 21 Contruction Regt gone to Holsworthy, 1st Armoured gone to Darwin) Amazing, as soon as I got past Heathcote, out came the sun and up went the temperature to 28.

Then on to Echuca. Crikey, I reckon I could have chucked a rock across the Murray.

Headed along the Murray Valley Hwy towards Swan Hill and tonight I'm camped on the shores of a lake just north or Kerang. Only a Rest Area, but there's shade, tables and a barbie. I don't need anything else.

Seeing I decided not to go to Tassie (I'm too stingy to spend $800 on the ferry fare and I couldn't find anybody to tell me how to drive there) I'm heading for the Flinders Ranges. I drove through Parachilna Gorge about 5 years ago and fell in love with it, but I was on a tight schedule that time, so this time I'm going to take my time and do lots of bushwalking, then up the old road through Leigh Creek and on to chambers pillar.

ah!! you're in for a great trip, wished I was with you!!! the $800 for the ship would have been spread over the six months that you would have stayed though wouldnt it, but I guess in six months she'd be gettin a bit cold for them bones

Good travels Mike.
Check out Warren Gorge which is in the lower reaches of the Flinders.
I camped in there some years ago, and had an absolute ball in the terrain, which included a fresh water spring. It may get a bit chilly in there at night, but it's always beautiful in the Flinders.
I believe Davo lives on the "door step" to the Flinders. It's a beautiful view and the colours change during the day and evening. Great photo ops.
By the way, love your descriptive blog.

Hey Mike, is there any water in Lake Boga? if its still dry you could find some stuff around the edges with a metal detector or old plane junk.
Thats one of my old stompin grounds, go and have a look at the pioneer settlement in Swan Hill and you will see a lot of the old Swan Hill there, It's where I was born, the old barber's shop is there where I used to get my hair cut as a kid for a shilling
