Any Divers out there?

I am hoping to take in all the best dive sites on my travels.  Any one else doing that too?

Oh dear Sophie you've left yourself open there because everyone expects me to ask what type of Diving, muff or scuba? But I WON'T ASK. I used to be a keen scuba man but that was back in the days of Jaques Costeau I was also a keen surfer but these days I only go in waste deep. I did borrow some goggles and did a bit of duck diving at Mataranka Springs but not a top dive spot. I could take some basic gear with me I guess but that would only incur Sybils wrath as I would be taking up space reserved for her sewing machine.

Basil, that was my first inference but I managed to withhold my comment

really only two sites in aus. worth looking at and that would be the great barrier reef, must see simply because its there, and the bottom of Tassie or the top of Tassie or pretty much all of Tassie's coastal areas

off the kimberley coast is another, watch the currents,

south australias yorke peninsula, crayfish, big schnapper and blue swimmer crabs, edithburgh is a magnet for divers from all over the world, the jetty is the big attraction, sea horseys and all manner of stuff,

we stayed in the area for a week down at port vincent (beautifull place) and whilst we were there went and had a look at the jetty, on return we spied this huge maourie man, had to be 8 foot if he was an inch, covered in tattoes and just eminating death or great harm upon anyone that even looked at him, I said G'day (really hoping he wouldnt eat me if he seen that I was submissive and freindly, well it works for dogs, I've seen it, if I had a tail I would have wagged it) he, to my surprise answered and turned out to be a gentle giant and a better fellow one would not meet

he was on his way down to the jetty to get himself and his family a free meal and invited us up to the bbq, I said O.K., we talked to this fellows wife and 103 kids (well it seemed like there was at least that many) up at the free barby area while we waited, good people

when he returned his bag was overflowing with all sorts of sea food, mussels clams, oysters and a couple of crays that I am sure were not legal size but delicious all the same

all in all the dragon and I had a fantastic day with a couple of huge but terrific people, but as usual I run off at the mouth, sorry, I will get back on track now.

eyre peninsula for all sorts of shellfish and sea horseys

kangaroo island is just magical around the point for magnificent underwater sites

oh!! Damn!! thats more than two isnt it, never mind

I'm a sandgroper, so please forgive the parochialism, but THE best diving in Oz would have to be the Ningaloo reef.

Although I seem to remember a dive I went to in Kings Cross . . . but that's another story

The worst diving would have to be the barrier reef, little to see, too many people and too many god damned yankee know it alls....
I was dissapointed ve vent schorkeling vis a boat load of chermans, that was the experience, they did not even know how to schwimmen and the day seemed to be taken up getting them organised with the Occasional OH MY GOD from some beligerant Yank....
Was far better @ Cooktown smaller boat, more our age - semiwornout old farts and stunning bikini (read very tennsie weensie) clad hostess (No Sybil I wan't looking she just kept standing in front of me) and the reef itself was better than at Cairns or Townsville. refreshments were served and the boat nearly capsized in the rush with all the swof's rushing to get served.

I skydive and have also undertaken the type Basil mentioned but that's not want your after. Have mates who reckon the only unspoiled dive spot close by is PNG they say diving in OZ is over rated and far to costly and when there is a good spot and conditions are right to dive the dive schools get their grubby little fangs into it and it's all over red rover.

You lot are shocking, silly me to expect anything else. Hmmmmmmmm I have done lots of SCUBA diving in the Barrier Reef, Lizard Island, Cod Hole, etc etc, Down South, WA, not Tassie, was afraid of the sharks near the Scallops but it seems the blooming Sharks are coming into local waters everywhere. I have done South West Rocks, Jervis Bay, Montague Island, loads of dives in Sydney, all over Europe, Egypt and Caribbean too - so fortunate, so lucky.

Seems like I asked the wrong question, you naughty lot.

Ah well seems like I am more experienced than you guys are in my style of diving.

Have fun and remind me not to be so naive with my next posting.

Yease.... just like the Crocs in the Daintree must prefer German tourists other wise the signs would be in English "Achtung Crocodillen schwimmen herein"

Im impressed with Sophies Diving CV but I did notice that she is not qualified for underwater mine clearance or pearl diving, slack Sophie slack you had better meet me at HMS Penguin and I'll show you the finer points...LOL
Has anyone else been conned by riding in nthe Yellow submarine up at Shute harbour? what a rort no zero's streaking in out of the sun the thing dosen't even submerge despite the klaxon.....

my nephew had his first skydive just recently, I gave him a question to ponder after he underwent all the safety hoobras and had to know all the ins and outs of airspeed and pigeon droppings at altitude and the chances of a birdstrike in his left parasol at 90 knots, and the current temperature of the south pacific penguin (fool there is no south pacific penguin, they are all on holidays at the pole)

I just asked him, what I thought was a perfectly reasonable question, I asked " how much time do you have left if your parachute fails to open at say 8,000 feet"

he sat down with pen and paper and started writing furiously, number upon number appeared until I interupted and stated that it was not a complex answer, you simply have the rest of your life, son, the rest of your life, to which he gave a snort and left,

kids today who can understand them, not me!!!

Basil I would have thought it would have read something like this "****zzenn mine comraden, nein svimminc, schnaapen ein nutsen offen"

Its not unlike flying every landing you walk away from is a good one  .  Most people think that there is something magic about been able to fly a fixed wing   but the fact is it's a boring as bat **** . Taking off is a natural course of events, if you get up enough speed the curvature of the earth will take over  and landing is really  only a controlled crash when you look at .  One thing for sure once up there you will come down eventually  with or without control.

Now flying rotary wing is a whole different ball game that's where skill is upper most  in demand , there's no jumping or ejecting option there  and at the end of the day you know your been at work.

These postings are cracking me up - you lot are so funny and so openly naughty.

But Basil, I have actually worked at HMS Penquin, as a civilian Registerd Nurse in the Operating Theatre there.  It was great.  I really wanted to see the Hyperbaric chamber, but then they closed the Theatre and threw us all out.  We had some great Sports surgeons there and it was a lovely location.

Shame..............  but I am still in touch with a great bunch I met there, so that can't be bad.

I am keen to do the Ningaloo Reef and the Yongalla, my diving kit will be coming with me no matter what you naughty lot say.

I am not even going to ask what a Dunny diver is?  I am sure 'Kenny' would have the answer to that one though.  What a funny Aussie movie that was - no Oscar though - so unfair.
