Yeah, dogs are harder to forget than out human friends, when a pet dies it knocks you for a true six.... And when you have to have one euthanased, yeah well that is an experience that does not go away for years - but You do it for the years of unconditional love and affection they give
Gracie is a Short Hair Pointed X'd with a Dane (or so the vet says), she is not a small dog.... I find the larger dogs tend to be easier to train, less agressive but more intimidating if that makes sense..... She only eatc 2 cups of dry food a day plus maybe a treat or two, so not expensive to feed.
As Cesar Milan says, "Dogs can be rehabilitaed, humans need to be trained".....
I found Gracie Via the RSPCA who now "process" the rescued/dumped hounds and grade them by behavioural traits, Gracie was a "Green" dog suitable for small children and was described as "goofy friendly".... I would not even consider buying a pet from a petshop cost a fortune and all you do is support the "Puppy Farming" busness....
A friend travels with a Siamese Cat. Siamese are apparently quite happy to travel unlike most breeds that generally do not like cars, though I like cats Siames are just to vocal....

Friends of mine have a (just on 5 months old,so still a pup) Neapolitan x Bull mastiff cross dog, who is as big as yours already Basil. I have 2 chihuahuas, about 5 years old. Their dog Basil ( named after my friends' father), loves to play with my two, and I'm still amazed at how gentle he is. They love bullying him,(cling on and hang from his lips etc. He's very intelligent, and if ever I got another dog, it would be one like him. The only worry I have, is in case he accidentally falls on them while playing boisterously, so I can't leave them unattended while they play.
Cheers,
xina.

Hello Mike and Judy.My second best mate was hit and killed by a4.wd last year.He was only 2 years old but was very important in our lives.Well thats it no more dogs, then the depression set in,high blood pressure etc.I did not know at the time that all those things were caused by the loss of my mate(Wally). My Dr advised me to get another dog.Well to cut a long story short I bought a pup from the very next litter that Wallys sire and dam had,in fact he was a brother 2 years removed. He is the most lovable dog, great sense of humour loves kids and humans.Father is an English Staffie mother English Staffie Am Staff x.Red in colour. We hope that we meet some of you on the roadOh by the way he is called Wally2.I know it sounds a bit silly calling him the same name as our original dog but we tried all names but he was still called Wally.Mike and Judy you mentioned a seperate thread about dogs.I am probably one of the guilty ones who butt in on other folks threads,it is not done to upset or take away the original  theme though it seems thatway.I will try and be a good boy in future.LoL.Cheers Ibbo.disbelief

when I was bitten hard by the black dog my bil's wife bought an ugly mutt home, he was not happy ordered her to get rid of it, he brought this ugly little mongrel down to me and she immediately "adopted me" he basically chucked this little mutt to me and said "keep her, I dont want it" we named her "fugly"

we have a large pond at the side of our house and in the depths of depression I would just sit and stare into it's depth's for hours, this little dog just would not let me be, she would come and lick my toes or jump up on my lap and not leave me be just wanting to play and be a pup

it was this ugly little mutt who singlehandedly did what no medication or person could do, she pulled me from the depths of depression and gave me back my life, that little mutt and I are now tottally inseperable, for some reason she "knew" of my problem and did what others could not, I now call her "fuggles" an uglier little dog you would not find but if anyone hurt her or anything happened to her I dont know what I would do

get another dog Mike, dont go without the unquestioning love and loyalty that they have to give

I had dinner in a restuarant that shall remain unnamed on sunday nite seated next to my new best mate Princess the Mastiff dog , head as high as the table when sitting. Own plate and scoffing titbits out of my hand like a lamb.

I think I've made a friend for life even though she lives elsewhere.

Just as well we were the only ones there !

Maybe I should start up a list of canine friendly eateries. It's OK for me because Gracie and I just bluff our way in but a cuppla places deserve a special mention..... The Icecream place on the boardwalk at Merimbula, gave Gracie 2 free icecreams to eat much to the amusement of the other customers, The take away in the main st of Pambula, we asked if it was OK for Gracie to sit outside with us, next thing they bring out a bowl of water and the guy asks does she eat chicken? then a chicken schnitzel was provided GRATIS for her and we had to pay for our burgers... Special mention to the Tramway Cafe at Loftus, not only did they pay more attention to Gracie than me but Gracie got to sit up front with the motorman when we went for a tram ride......
Then in a move that was not for me so good but I had promised a fellow retired sapper that we could meet for a beer, one thing led to another and we ended up at the SME Museum, People are saluting Gracie, a case of mistaken identity, have a look at the pics which I dug up after this.....
A very young Basil and Ceasar, not Gracie but looks similar...

Yes it was taken while we were waiting to load a bloke into it who had fallen down a well, those sleds ( A stretcher) used to be tied to the skids of the Hueys for "patient transport" We were so young and gung Ho in those days, not to mention stupid.......

Reading this thread made me think of my beloved Hooch. A maltese chihuahua cross. an uglier dog you have never seen. He came into my life 17 years ago after escaping from an abusive marriage. (me that is). He guided me faithfully through that recovery, showed my 4 sons that looks aint eveything, but love and patience are. He was with me while I met and married the worlds best husband, and we were both with him when he had to leave this world at age 17. He now sleeps up near the swimming pool, and I hope the new owners of this house (when we find them) will enjoy the summertime happy hours in his piece of the garden.
Now having got that off my chest, and found the tissues, how can I convice hubby that our other dog is lonely and needs a new friend. Nothing to do with me wanting another dog to love of course.

Long live dogs and their loving owners.
