Yeah, "le ripp orff totale" a park in Merimbula goes from $27 off peak to $132 peak for 2 persons per night.......Now this may appear expensive and you might think that a motel would be cheaper unfortunatley Merimbula is cashing in on the peak tourist dollar and Motel rooms go from around the $80 - $100 a night off peak to around the $300 - $600 peak with some places offering a greet "deal" at $2000 for 7 days....

Any body quoted me prices like that, I'd ask them where their horse was - Ned Kelly always had a horse.

I'm hearing Ya . I feel sorry for the worker with 3 kids trying to take the hols during the factory chrissie shut down. $2000 / 7 days for basically a room in a motel is definitely Ned Kelly material.

Blatant robbery is everywhere. I think it's just sooooo rude to advertise the absolute rip off during peak periods.
I use parks because I choose to, and it's costing more than fuel at the moment.
I saw this when I live in a park in Broome for 9 years, and couldn't believe how cheeky they were to do this. Most of the tariffs are set for a couple, and then they add on for extras.
I'm a solo traveller and have to pay the dual cost. Even if I'm in a Top Tourist or Big 4 I have to pay the "couple" rate.
I have been in a park in Cairns for more than 6 months, and haven't yet been offered a long-term rate, as the law requires. I'm dealing with it, but it just goes to show the lengths park proprietors are prepared to go to get the top dollar for as long as they can. And I'm only here for this long because I've been medically restrained.
Even if I wanted to get out of town now, there's no where to go as the whole top of Qld is cut off from the bottom.
The park is relatively quiet now, but there still is a little stream of camper vans and motorhomes dribbling through town, and they too are now stranded until the floods recede.
As far as the blatant rip off goes, I think it's about time the practice is investigated by prices and consumers, or who ever oversees these things.

Ha ha.... yeah but Ned didn't have to worry about some Ranger in Gestapo mode telling you you can't take your horse onto his patch....
Even bush camps are chokkers at Xmas, if there is a way in it will be crowded - usually with yobbos who just want to get blind drunk at everyone elses pleasure....
The lesson is not to bother venturing out over Xmas/Easter school hols if you can avoid it.....

Very hard to avoid when my van is my home. I have to park it somewhere.
I find the tropics are much quieter at this time of the year, and I don't mind the humidity or the storms. However, flooding is a bit of a worry, and the threat of tropical cyclones keeps me on the toes, and on the internet BOM site, weather watching.
Fortunately I'm on a site which doesn't flood, although the quagmire around the slab and under the van could be giving breeding space to the mozzies carrying dengue fever.
Can't go swimming at the non-existent beach at Cairns, and all the nearby beaches have crocs and stingers. The park pool is, believe it or not, too bloody cold from the rainwater input, and the lack of sunshine.
I'm thankful I'm not at Ingham.
And just for info, there's not a spud on the shelves at my loval Woollies. They brought a coastal freighter full of stores in to port last Thursday, and it's all gone already. The next ship is due on Tuesday. They're shipping the equivalent of 40 semis in at the time.
That's life in the bush. Beautiful, but at times cruel.
My thoughts are with everyone who has been suffering the incredible heat waves and the tragic fires. I'm sorry we can't take the water down south.

I found that was the thing in FNQ.... The lack of quality fresh fruit and veg unless you want tropical....Maybe Granny a move to Mareeba or Atherton would make things more pleasant?

I've been to both those places, but they are all suffering some sort of hardship because of the extreme wet this season and transport difficulties.
The fresh fruit and veg, and all sorts of pre-packed food is thin on the shelves, and I'd say everywhere else would be the same because the road is still blocked by the floods south of here. It's not a matter of fresh or local, which I do try to buy for myself.
Today they brought a jumbo jet full of essential into Cairns, and they expect another ship load this week.
And at the moment I'm sort of stuck in town getting more attention than I ever thought possible. Pity it's medical attention, but I'm ok, there's nothing wrong with me. The doctor's just keep finding stuff. It's all under control and fixable.
In the mean time I just have to survive on beetroot and tuna sandwiches, if I can buy the bread. Only joking...
At the moment I'm just feeling very fortunate to be able to put both feet on the floor of my van every morning.
These disasters have certainly focussed on the real valuables in our lives. Us, our loved ones and mostly, our health.
Even in adversity, LIFE is good.

WOT GRANNY NO BREADMAKER????? And here am I thinking you were a woman of total independency, how do you survive without a breadmaker? Nothing wrong with beetroot sandwiches.... You must have a gold card cause everytime I go near a doctor they discover my gold card and that gives em carte blanche to send me off "for more tests" and theres nothing wrong with me apart from a touch of insanity.....

Well Baz, I'm on my own and a loaf of bread lasts me about 2 or 3 wks. I freeze it in the Waeco with all the other food I pre-cook and pack into serve sizes. If I eat anymore bread I may as well tape the slices to my backside, because that's where they end up.
Besides, a breadmaker is another gadget to find a space for.
An independent woman does not live by bread alone.

The health issues have been long term, and as long as I take the pills, lots of pills, I'm ok. but a blood test exposed extremely high cholesterol, and so the medical fraternity of Cairns has been investigating. I'm actually excited about the surgery I will have to have eventually to remove a couple of benign tumours which are generating hormones causing massive high blood pressure and potassium deficiency. A box of bananas a day would just about give me enough to keep me alive. It means I will be able to throw some of the pills away after a long time. The specialists have been very thorough and supportive with their investigations and I'm feeling very confident with their treatment.
