NSW Road Rules

Just talking with a mate of mine,  ex NSW  Highway Patrol  who happened to mention a road rule that requires all vehicles over 7.5 mts to display  a sign stating the obvious . " Do Not Overtake Turning Vehicles "

Unless  you are  towing a van or even the average box trailer with a push bike  a normal rig towed by the average sized vehicle  would surely  come in at over 7.5 mts .

Anyone out there ever been picked up for this type of offence   or is it just another of the many stupid road rules that was ill conceived by the Chair Borne Division of the RTA.

What's the rules in other states require.

Interesting question.
My bus requires a MR licence to drive it, all because its GVM is over the limit of a car licence, yet if I tore say the notsowellworking fridge and the stove out and lost a few kilos it would be back to car licence. Still the same vehicle you're driving though, its kinda rediculous sometimes.

Being a retired one of those myself, I guess it would be one of those many traffic regulations that they have which do not make any sense.  To me it sounds as tho it would be for heavy vehicles only.  I do know that farm machinery exceeding a certain length require a permit and signage, however it is one of those things in which common sense SHOULD prevail.  However there are a lot of young (Gun Ho) HWP Police out there that do not have such a thing as common sense.  Trust me I know smile

Come to think of it, I have never seen a Caravan with such signage attached, ummm I think I may have seen one or two in my travels, which is not many considering the number of units on the road.

It is a good point tho Wombat and no doubt your mate is correct, however I am going to check it out.  Maybe it is one of the traffic regs with an exemption.    It is also an Offence to Ride a Horse whilst intoxicated wink

Take care and stay well

Peter

Hi.Funny thing road rules. At a gathering of mates recently someone brought up the question of drink driving, well we all know it is illegal to drive whilst over the limit, but one of the guys is a serving traffic policeman and he informed us that if the law was followed to the letter you could be booked for drinking from a bottle or can etc. whilst in charge of a motor vehicle and driving on a public road.No more shaving, reading road maps, looking at a GPS,no more putting on make up,reading newspapers.I guess that it is ok to have the odd glance at the dashboard instuments. As I mentioned earlier this conversation took place at a B.B.Q and is not meant to be taken in anything but a little jibe at some of the things we could be pinged for.Cheers Ibbo.wink

A couple of interesting and subjective road rules that I know can be broken and can get you a fine are;
1) crossing an unbroken lane line including the one at the left hand side of the road &
2) travelling without a permit on the highway at a speed that is less than 20 km/h below the speed limit ie, driving at 79km/h in a 100km/h zone is an offence unless you have a permit.

Clarification any one?

well there are a lot of very old road rules that in theory still apply, for instance if one wishes to stick to the letter of the law when traveling at night there should be a person walking in front of the carriage carrying a lantern so as to not startle any oncoming vehicles

also all public houses (pubs) should have no less than two post and rail configurations at the front of the building so as to tie ones horse to

a lot of people have been booked recently driving the Mazda t4600 as well as other truck based motorhomes, the trouble is the carrying capacity of the vehicle as well as the weight, there are two types of tyres that can be fitted standard on these motorhomes, one set will only allow the vehicle to carry up to the combined weight of 5 ton (car license) and the other set allows the vehicle to exceed the 5 ton weight (light rigid license required) caution must be noted when replacing these tyres

another lifetime ago I was driving in to adealide at the signed speed limit  of 80 kph, I was being passed left right and centre, to my surprise I was pulled over by a poncy little motorbike cop and booked for "causing a mobile traffic obstruction" when I told him I was only obeying the traffic rules he stated that one must keep up with the traffic, I appealed and it was chucked out but how ridiculous is that!!

Mate of mine was booked a few years ago now on the Snowy Mountains Hwy near Nimatabell for crossing a railway crossing without stopping. trouble was that the Cooma- Bombala railway had been shut for years still the cop read him the riot act and gave him a fine which he duly defended in court on 2 grounds 1) the railway crossing was no longer marked and 2) the railway had been closed for a decade..... The Magistrate dropped his fine but gave him an earful telling him that even though the signs had been removed and the trains no longer ran it was still gazzeted as a railway and technically he was still in breach of the law but he said as there was no possible chance of collision with a train he would forget the matter....

yep got a bil in stockport down the other side of clare, a railway runs through the town complete with stop signs

even though there has not been a train for some 20 years, the local copper sits in the middle of the town (about 30 houses) where he can see both stop signs on the entrance and exit of the town and the mongrel books anyone who does not stop,

they all must pay because it is still signed as such

I don't know about 20k's below the posted limit, sounds a  bit pathetic to me, that would mean I'd be fined everytime I hit an open road! The beast only cruises at bloody 80 :))

Although I do recall my grandmother been fined for travelling to slow in a 100K limit, she was doing 20 K's hehe.

Sense is so uncommon I wonder why they use the term common  and associate it with sense.

Cop this light set up for a rule breaker that carries an Australian Design  Rule  claim

G'day,
Over here in the West we only have 2 Freeways, the Kwinana and the Mitchell Freeways and it is illegal to travel at more than 20 kilometers under the signed speed limit which for most of the Freeway is 100 kilometers.

Yes it's always been  illegal to have any forward facing lights mounted higher than those fitted at manufacture  , same as no rod carriers on the roo bar .  As you already possibly know the spoties must be connected to the high beam switch through an independant switch   so when you dim the lights the spoties go out or you can completely isolate power to  the spoties altogether.

Work lights fitted to a  roof rack facing the rear are okay but must be mounted to prevent any movement to allow them to  face directly to the front  or swivel  greater than 180 degrees

They must only be able to be switched from the light itself not from the cab . when not in use must face down towards the ground of vehicle tray

In some inspection stations they still check the beam height on low and high before giving you a rego pass or fail.

Up sizing the wattage of the cars headlights globes  can also be enough to get it deemed unroadworthy.

Having just returned from a trip, I have a gripe about NSW rules, but it applies all over - tail gaters

I found in NSW, these buggers do it ALL the time. 100kph and you cannot see the front of their car in th rear view, they are that close. No chance to overtake, no one else about, they must love me and want to be as close as possible, thats all I could put it down too

Had to resist hitting the brakes and throttle at the same time, so many times. I was on holiday, so did not do it, but if I lived there....

Twobob,

Welcome to NSW.  The dearest State in Australia to live in with some of the worst drivers in Australia (apart from the ACT).

Nothing else I can add.  You have said it all.smile

As a Canberran of long standing I agree about ACT drivers, especially our eldrly drivers. There is no age or medical tests in the ACT apart from eye tests. So we have a fair proportion of drivers who should not be on the road for many reasons but all ACT drivers can see, it's just that remebering where you are or what side of the road your sposed to be on does not enter into it when you are 93 and in an Aged Care facility....

just a couple of things re posts already here,

(1) drunk in charge of a horse, we had this old feller living in pirie who had a horse and carriage, most nights he would be in the pub and the horse would patiently wait outside, when it was closing time the publican would pour him in the back of the wagon and the horse would take him home, copper pulled the horsey up one night and booked the drunk in the back, didnt stand up in court as the old fellow was not in charge of the horse at the time, smart things these horseys

(2) I disagree about nsw drivers being the worst, victorians and tasmanians have yet to discover the blinker switch when changing direction of travel, they also think that the white line is to be placed squarely beneath the drivers backside leaving half of the vehicle into oncoming traffic and it is fine to pass on double lines and also tailgate at speed
