gday patrick and welcome to the forum, I think it's a well known fact that garmin rule in this area, I recommend the garmin nuvi 760, currently on ebay, it's about a hundred bucks more than you stated but it comes out with 2009 maps already loaded. but realistically a lot of the cheaper ones on the market will get you through most cities without a problem, the problem is they are out of date within a couple of years so the updates are crucial, what I like about the garmin is that it takes "shonky maps" which is a website that short circuits the expensive update system

I have had the same problem, which one to buy?

I bought a TOMTOM gps from Dick Smiths cost $350.00 the reason :-

1 Large screen (eyes are not as good as they used to be)
2 Touch screen prompts. easy to navigate through
3 Very easy to use. ( with-out glasses)
4 You can get the latest down-doads free from their web site.

I like it and most of all the ladies voice is nice she's called Jane.

the dearer the gps the more is does the more you get confused trying to use it.i have a tom tom,suits me,but it just boils down to personal preference.

I have a LG and it does everything I want it to.
Mine is called Jen and the number of domestics I have with her would surely end in divorce if we were married.
Sometimes I just wonder why she is sending me the way she does, its fine if you don't know where you are, I would be lost without her when I am away working in the country but around areas i know boy she can be a PITA.

Thanks to all your advice. It looks as if its a case of what suits you. I have been considering the Mio moov 300 with 4.3" screen and Australian voices (so it says). It doesn't have any frills like MP3 or reverse cycle playbacks and definitely does not have a blue tooth. Maybe a Garmin is the go.

mate you dont need bluetooth or mp3, mines got it but I dont use it, mine is a logic gear sl350s, didnt want to announce what it was because in here you get shouted down if you have an opinion, I have had mine for a couple of years without problems, it is just starting to faulter now with a new roundabout we came across at salisbury s.a., I seen a couple in big w for under $300 cant remember the brand but they looked pretty good and a decent size screen, there is one on ebay at the moment that incorporates a wireless reversing camera (included) it is also a 7" screen I was thinking about investing in that one, whatever you choose I am sure will be fine, the cheaper ones are getting better and better, as was stated in a previous thread "they will be coming out as giveaways in cereal boxes shortly". good luck and let us know what you finish up with

I bought an elcheapo via EBay and it uses route 66 maps and has a huge screen. At time it does tell me to go left when I now to go right but it soon corrects itself. A lovely lady named Audrey gives the directions in a very BBC announcers voice. I do think the voice is important as if the words are slurred well you get my drift....

I was in Berri yesterday afternoon when I got a call to go to Pinnaroo for an urgent job. Punched in the address into the GPS and got a distance of 397Km's and travelling time of 5 hrs. Knowing that it is only about 120K's we had a bit of a tiff on this one. Checked that i had quickest route selected, that was right , reset the satellite staus still the same. Decided to leave it on but with volume turned off, i headed the way I wanted, into loxton (20K),turn right at the big roundabout (can never remember road names, just how to get to places) 104 K's to Pinnaroo. It wasn't untill I was about 50K's from Pinaroo that it decided that I knew what I was doing.

As i said in a previous reply, divorce from Jen (GPS) is becoming a distinct possibility.

I have spent the last 3 days in Barrossa Valley, Clare Valley and now the Riverland, given the number of vans/camper trailers on the road fuel prices doesn't seem to be having an effect
