Biting midges have a histamine like substance in their saliva which can cause intense itching in some people.

have you tried spraying around the doorway and windows with the old brown Liserine, can also be sprayed on your person to prevent bites but it is a little sticky.

Mossies and Midges hate the Listerine.

I've heard that before but have never tried it. I do use Natures Botanical Rosemary and Cedarwood creme quite successfully.

Have not used that product though I have heard that it is a very good one, as Vitamin B1 works for us we use that as it it relatively cheap and any way we can save a few bob is fine with me.

Most definitely!!!! Us old pensioners need every cent we can get so we can travel some more and enjoy this great country we are fortunate enough to live in.

Hehehe....I don't qualify as either old or pensioner yet JRH but I sure need as much money for travel as I can get.

I'm what is called self funded with no govt assistance at all and I am sure there are plenty more like me.

Not whinging about it but I lost all my super when I had a workplace accident and had to rely on the pension.

I feel the same about cooktown,very interesting place,was there 2008 and stayed at endeavoure falls tourist park,30 klm nth of town very nice,set amongst palm trees,nicely set out,falls at back of park 2min away. rvtraveller2 neil biggrin biggrin biggrin

Yep well that's BHP for you hey, paid me out as if I had retired due to ill health consequently I lost over $130,000 in super. still thems the breaks.

Gillard's Beach. About 20km's From Tathra NSW (National Park). You get your own personal camping spot on the beach. Stunning. Wild life everywhere. Bit of a dirt track to get there but we took our caravan in. Toilets only. But is the highlight so far.

Agree with so many places mentioned especially Cooktown. Another of our favourite destinations is Cape Arid west of esperance, especially in the whale season. Another is Cheynes Beach. Cheers Glenda

For some reason I am unable to load a photo - but I will try and paint a mental picture of a most beautiful place I have just been to - it is the Cawnpore Range, between Boulia and Winton here in Qld. From flat grasslands interspersed with low bushes, you start to see flat topped hills,(mesas) the area is between Hamilton ruins and Middleton Hotel. These hills are spectacular - you could think you are in Arizona, truly. We travelled along till we came to a lookout, which we climbed up to, reading the information about the area, it is a catchment area which ultimately flows into Lake Eyre - the area is about 476,000 square kilometres - and the Diamintina section is THREE TIMES LARGER THAN ENGLAND!!!!!!

From the lookout we saw a track that went up one of the nearby flat topped hills - we walked up, climbing the last 10 feet or so - the view was absolutely GOBSTOPPING!!!!!! There is no other word for it - stunning, The mesas, shrubs, Mitchell grass and distant mountains - it is absolutely awe inspiring and something not to be missed if you are in this area.

When I get to more regular reception, I will attempt to upload some photos.

Thought I had posted on this subject of cawnpore last night but where has it gone. Anyway, we were there in 2006 in the severe drought times with not a blade of green grass & we were waiting for John wayne to ride down from the hills! Last year took photos in the same situations & the difference is amazing. Have stitched 4 photos together from both years for comparison. Have had 2006 ones photoshopped by camera house & mounted on timber- am going to get last years doen when a few spare $!

Folk mentioning wandering up Mossman Gorge. We left vans at cousins cane farm at Mossman to do the Cape again. Cousins travelling with us wanted to go up the Gorge as we had done previously. You now have to pay, apparently big dollars, & go with a tour. Peter (local all his life) said locals not too happy with the situation. We also sat in the river (1998). I imagine all the detals would be online but I have not bothered to look .

Today must count among one of the "magic places I have been"!!!!! Cradle Mountain, Tasmania - snow capped!!!!!! Yep the previous few days shocking weather produced snow on Cradle Mountain - what a sight - just wonderful!!!!!!
