Travelling with cats

My husband and I are in our early 50's;  currently looking at buying a caravan with a view to commence travelling around Queensland in 2009, and later on all of Australia. We own two de-sexed male Manx cats of a genteel nature and would like to know if it is possible to travel with cats, if they are trained to lead on a harness, and if we only use caravan parks that allow cats - if any?

Hi Zekali,
As I just said to Carole below,I would not travel with a pet.
That said, many people do.
With cats, I think it might be up to the at as well, though?

There are CPs that do allow pets.
If it is a question of 'travel with the cats,or don't travel', GO FOR IT!

Cheers,
Peter.

What happens when you get to a place with two parks and they both don't accept animals?
I reckon you limit your options too much.
We left our beloved cat behind.
Look up any web sites "Travelling with cats'' and find out how difficult that can be.
Cats are not made for travelling.

If your cats are ok with the car I'd go for it. You would find a bit of opposition from the community doogooders who think they are the only animals allowed to have a holiday and you would have to be extra careful of snakes, Possums and platypus....
Cat's, dogs, budgies, parrots all make fantastic traveling companions if they are trained and restrained...

Hi Zekali
Nice to see you are wanting to take your two male cats on your travels. For some people to say, leave them at home, when you don't have children these are your kids, you have to take them.
Have you thought about how you would harness them when travelling in the van?
I have 2 male Siamese cats and take them everywhere. I would be interested to know how you restrain your cats.

Kind Regards
Kookla

Kookla,

you probably won't get an answer from Zekali, as Sue hasn't been active on the forum since 2008, just after asking this question.

Others may be able to give you some answers.

Hi everyone and possibly cat lovers! We've been caretaking a caravan park for a year and when we arrived here, a little (approx 4 month) stray kitten wandered in to our annexe and, as he was obviously dumped or had been left behind by someone in a caravan, he won us over. They say animals pick their owners. He's now been with us for a year but it looks like we have to move on soon and we are concerned how he will travel. He is great in the car but he tends to be a bit of a wanderer. Although we tether him at night, I am afraid he might escape one day while we are free-camping somewhere along the road. Has anyone ever had a cat that tends to run off and any suggestions please?

Cheers fellow nomads
