Insurance questions for us new nomads

Hi all

We're in the process of purchasing a new tug and 'van and are now wading through the insurance process for both.  I'd love to hear from people's experience and if naming particular companies is frowned upon, please pm me to have a more private discussion of pro's and cons.

So far we've had a couple who refuse to insure the 'van for it's purchase price, they were both a full $10k under.  And no, we're pretty sure we didn't pay over the odds for it.  Found a couple that just don't insure caravans at all, one that would only ensure if it never went off paved roads (really?), another that would only insure aluminium clad caravans confuse !

The other half just found one that looks as good as an insurance co can get and they offer (for $300 extra of course) a premium insurance that seems to cover almost every eventuality, even funeral insurance for us and some insurance for our pets should they need a vet.  We're looking at a little under $1500 with this mob for a combined insurance and agreed value on $58k for the ute and $85 for the caravan.  I think this is reasonable, providing they are reputable.

Any advice on good and bad experiences with particular companies would be appreciated.  We're not up to speed yet on the lesser known companies and welcome advice about who's good to deal with if and when you've had a problem out there on the road.

Many thanks.

C.

At one time I had all my cars, and caravans, fully comprehensive insured, with RAC Western Australia

They appear to have a good name

But...

As I never made a claim, then I can not say how good/bad they are

I am currently with CIL as RAC did not cover motorhomes

But...

Once again, as I never made a claim, then I can not say how good/bad they are

Yeah, I know Tony - I've got the same problem. As far as problems go it's a pretty good one to have. From memory the husband made a claim once about 15 years ago when a lady backed into his parked car. I think that was with Budget and I don't recall any problems but they weren't terribly helpful about insuring the caravan this time around.

I'll give your recommendation a call - don't know if you don't ask.

Thanks,
C.

Below is a link (on this forum) to what my research told me in 2016, tipsypixie

When 2017 came around, my wife just automatically paid the premium

If I manage to spot the 2018 reminder when it arrives, I shall once again do some research

This is for a motorhome, and I have no idea if it is the same for a caravan

I joined CMCA and as a member was able to insure through Ken Tame. Very good rates and agreed value including my detectors when in the 4x4. I have made one claim when sideswiped by a truck in the city. The claim was very smooth process. The excess is very good as well, on $200.

Thanks Tony and Hottuna. Neither of us had ever heard of CMCA before, or Ken Tame. Luckily we've still got a couple of weeks up our sleeve before having to get it completely sorted and your comments are very valuable to us.

Regarding CMCA - I've had a quick look and they seem to offer quite a lot. It does however stand for Caravan and Motorhome Club ... we've got a caravan. Am I right in assuming that they're an inclusive organisation and we wouldn't be ostracized for having a draw bar?

Cheers
C.

Hence the c in cmca. The only stipulation they have is you must have a caravan and 4x4, an old falcon just will not do.

You need to join the cmca for about $75, you then have access to the insurance through Ken Tame.

Actually the C stands for Campervan but they will admit caravan owners as associate members.

Got a quote from Ken Tame last year and they were much dearer than current insurer. Since they sold out to Allianz they aren't as cheap as they used to be.
