Wife's first drive with the van

Heading south on the New England around Tenterfield is a great stretch of road for a first time drive (tow). I suggested to the wife that she give it a go. At the time she was not feeling up to it. After two weeks on the road and only driving when the van was not on, the good wife had had enough of sitting in the navigators seat so we decided she give it whirl. We were on a good stretch of H/way heading west from Casino when she took the helm, our target for the day was Warwick. Now being the navigator, I thought it would be a good idea to leave this road as I had found a shortcut on the map, so I directed her to turn north into the Clarence Way. We turned onto a nice wide stretch of road. " This looks nice dear" ...... WTF...... within 3ks the road turned into a one lane piece of bitumen with potholes bigger than the car. LOL the adventure was on as the road was too narrow to turn around. The good lady spent the next 5 hrs  changing between 2nd and at best 4th gear. Some places the road had little shoulders with some steep drop offs on the left hand side. For those who may be familiar with the area we took the Clarence Way through Bonalbo ( a lovely little town, and I was glad to see it had an ambulance and a hospital) then to Ubernville. It was at this little town things went down hill a little as at the only intersection in the town the navigator said go left instead of right ( this would have kept us on the Clarence to Woodenbong). So off we went on the Tooloom Rd. Those of you who enjoy extreme sports please travel this lovely piece of road in a car towing a van when it's the drivers first time towing. There is some beautiful scenery along this route. The road does not see a lot of maintenance crews and actually has grass growing through the bitumen in places.  Tooloom Road joins the Mt Lindsay Road once you hit this road its great travelling up through Killarney to Warwick. I must say that I am extremely proud of how well the wife handled the whole adventure. I am also amazed that we are still married and neither is severely wounded.

Safe travels.

Well done to your wife.  smile Those tracks they pass off as roads really crack me up. They aren't too bad though, but being secondary roads, a lot of them are not maintained too well. Western Victoria has plenty of them. Don't really see them here in SA.

Cheers, Meetoo.

Ah yes, know some of that road and sounds like it hasn't changed any since we were on it quite a few years ago. I'm glad all is well with you. Cheers.

My hat off to your wife, great job - my husband wants me to try towing the van but I am not confident - I would like to try in a big big carpark first , we have a 22" caravan and I should have started when we had our Jayco Penguin . If I go behind the wheel, I will make sure it is not around Casino.

It would've been a lot safer if she'd pulled over & you would've taken over.

Not a good idea letting an inexperienced tow person travel a road like that.

Good friends of ours were giving the missus her first towing tryout when she overtook a road train doing 110kph.

That was her first & last time towing their 23ft caravan. laughing.gif laughing.gif
