Diesel motor oilI

I have a 3 ltr turbo diesel 160 Fiat motorhome and have always used the motor oil recommended .It has a low viscosity of 5W although it is not only fairly expensive but a bit hard to get except from Fiat dealers . Has anyone ever used anther brand of oil or, one of a higher viscosity rating as it is probably not as cold where we travel as in some other overseas countries. Advice would be welcome.

Bill

G'day Bill and welcome to the forum. You may get a better response to your question if you copy it into the "Techies" section

Any idea what the rating of the oil is? My V6TD navara uses ACEA C4 oil which is also 5w-30. I use Penrite oil which I can get from most auto shops

Modern motors run tight bearing clearances. It's built like that due to pollution (EPA) requirements . A few Visc points higher on the lower number doesn't matter too much . Just take it easy for the first 2 or 3 klrs on cold starts . If oil is too thick it doesn't spread properly over bearing .

Welcome to the forum Bill.  Don't forget to try the two ongoing games here - 'Who is This' in the 'I Digress' section and 'Pick this Place' in the 'General' Section - a great source to find new places to visit.

Welcome to the gang Bill, enjoy here and out in the playground.

I too often think about what you ask as I have trouble finding 5w/30 diesel oil myself.

Keep Safe on the roads and out there.

Firstly welcome to the forum, Bill

I am not a mechanic

I have the previous model Fiat engine, a 2.8 JTD

I am led to believe that the Fiat engine is made in Europe for colder conditions, and they recommend their own expensive, (if it is available in your area?) Selena type engine oil

Main brand oil companies recommend their own full synthetic 5W-30 as they are just following the Fiat recommendation grade

I put in my engine full synthetic 10W-40, as I believe I will never, ever, be in less than minus 10 degrees Celsius temperatures, but hotter than the European temperatures, especially as I travel longer distances

If you look up some reputable oil brands, they will tell you what type of oil to purchase from them, for your vehicle, plus the amount required, (from memory 7 litres for your engine)

Hope that this info is useful to you
