This is a tragedy that did not need to happen. The protocol is never use a snatch strap with out putting a damper over it. Then if it breaks it will not fly. Sounds to me as tho it may have been attached to something like a towball which may have become a missile. There are sound practices for snatching and for good reason. In this case I doubt they were followed and the consequences are disaster.

A flying tow ball would have taken out the driver of the towed vehicle. Sounds to me like a metal piece broke from the towed vehicle. (Rated shackle came off a dodgy tow point perhaps?)

Sounds like he should have been more carefull in hind site, but he paid a dreadfull price for helping some one poor guy..

Peter I have tried to read the links to get the full story, and have read on line what news articles are saying.
One story says they were towing, another says they were snatching out of a sand bog. But nowhere does it say the vehicle being pulled was from the front or the rear. So confusion reins. So a flying towball could have come from the bogged vehicle, but I do not know. what I do know that it must have been a fairly solid object under a fair strain, ( to make it fly) so I surmise it was a snatch not a tow.
Unfortunately it is a tragedy that possibly could have been avoided.

When you think about it, each and every accident could have been avoided with more care and attention. There is no such thing as an unavoidable accident.

My Mum used to say that us 3 kids were "accidents"
