Hoping to travel - no caravan

Hello everyone, thanks for accepting me into this most informative and entertaining forum!  I'm Trish, and retired at Christmas.  My husband, Ian, has a disability so towing a van isn't for us as I am the sole driver and Ian's mobility problems make small spaces difficult to live in.  But we have recently done a long drive from Brisbane to Cairns staying at reasonably priced but clean and comfortable hotels (along with a house sit in Bowen) and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, so we hope to do more road trips and are open to tips and ideas to improve our experience.

Currently we are discussing ways that we can economically cater for ourselves along the way.  I'm thinking some basic food items to create simple dinners at motels.....perhaps buying something like a George Foreman grill so we can do steaks, sausages etc to serve with salad.  Also looking into hotels that have barbecue facilities etc.  Of course breakfast is easy, and we don't mind paying for some meals out.....we want to try local restaurants and pubs along the way too.

Anyway, that's a little about us and our plans.  Next trip will be to Longreach from Brisbane, perhaps in late August or early September.  Can't wait to get going!

Any thoughts or ideas always welcome

Cheers

Trish and Ian

Hello Poly64

A very warm welcome from me also

I once went on an employment ride, where for nearly six months my accommodation was a motel, in a small country town, not really being into the pub scene, I cooked my own meals, in the motel room

I carried an electric toaster, and an electric Jaffle Iron (I think that it is called), plate, knife and fork, salt and pepper, butter, bread, cold meat, cheese, tomato, long life milk, etc

I would make a normal sandwich and then cook it in the electric Jaffle Iron

I am certainly not known for my cooking ability, but I do not remember going hungry, and it was much cheaper than the motel meal

I never mentioned to the motel people that I was coking in my room

Hope that this info is useful to you

And its welcome from us two 2 Polly64 good on ya for getting about this big place we call OZ, have to say I haven't thought about traveling with someone with a disability but house sitting sounds like a great place to start for you two, on the food front have you thought about a " dream pot " that could help with the evening or mid day meal , great for stews through to corn beef n veg n even cakes .

Welcome to the forum Trish and Ian.  Don't forget to try the two ongoing games here - 'Who is This' in the 'I Digress' section and 'Pick this Place' in the 'General' Section - a great source to find new places to visit.
