Researching first timer

hi all, new and green as...recently retired and chewing at the bit to get going. have a query. Researching vans and want comfort, or, at least other half does. However, don't necessarily want to change the "tug" I currently have. It be a jeep Cherokee Kk 3.7 litre petrol. I realise diesel is pref but have owned jeep since new and it's only done 77,000 in 8 years so want to get monies worth before upgrade. Advice would be appreciated. Considering to tow 18 or 19 footer. Appreciate in advance.

G'day Quicky and welcome to the forum.  Do feel free to join in the fun games - Who is This under the Digress section and Name this Place under the general section.  The latter is a great way to find new places to visit.  As regards your options you will need to check out your car handbook to find the Max towing weights and all up weights.  Best to aim a fair bit under that to ensure the tail doesn't wag the dog.

Welcome to the gang Quicky, enjoy here and out in the playground.

I agree that it is important to keep well under the tugs maximum or as much as possible at least.

I have both the tug and aluminium tee pee under their max. Although the tug is well under but the tee pee is just under.

Keep Safe on the roads and out there.

Also a warm welcome from me, Quicky

It is very hard to recommend a vehicle, and caravan for someone
We are all different, and that is probably why there are so many types of vehicles, and caravans

I looked around for six months before I found a second hand caravan, to tow behind my 6 cylinder Ford Falcon

As you have already got your tug, your handbook, or dealer, will be able to tell you the maximum weight you can tow
If you go and look at caravans, within that weight range, you will eventually find something for your situation

Unless you are getting a caravan custom made, to your exact specifications, then it will be a compromise caravan, which ticks most of your boxes

I can only recommend a 1984 Viscount, 17 foot caravan, as that is the only one I have owned

I did find a lot of enjoyment looking for a caravan, and also hope that you find it enjoyable

Welcome Quicky ( that just doesn't sound right) if I have this right ( a 2009 Jeep Cherokee 3.7 petrol SUV? Yes) if so, you are going to be limited by the maximum tow capacity of 1600kg .

Thanx to those that replied, much appreciated. As both me and other half are so new to this we are constantly reviewing our options; tug and tow, or make it a motorhome. Many pros and cons with both options however tug and tow will now require new tug, MH as has been proposed by some will require to tow small 4WD for touring purposes when set up. Both options are doable, just need to set in concrete best option so, its shopping around for decent deal. Sad to see my kk go, but it's harder to release the Harley. New adventures will require sacrifices but it's no good hanging on to the past. See you all (possibly) sometime down the track.

The key is to be happy with the setup you choose, so do plenty of research on want you want of your setup, like are you going to free camp or use van parks or low cost areas. There is a search button on top of the page and you can almost bet that whatever you think of has probably been raised before, so just type a word or two and begin the journey. Good Luck.
