I have travelled that road starting back in the 60's, shifting oil rigs. It was known as the Warburton Track all those years ago. Then I was driving the express bus ex Perth to Alice Springs. (That was 1990) Later I was driving tour coaches up that road. More recently, four years ago. The road is well maintained, with information parking areas along the way, plus fully stocked shops, caravan parks and fuel available. Naturally enough, you don't drive into the indiginous communities.
I did it twice in 2010. An absolute blast but unforgiving of those that are unfamiliar with the risks associated with remote travel. Keep slow. Watch for the shoulder. Double check everything. Water = Survival. It is worth the risk. Forget about Ayers rock but keep a day at least for a stroll round the Olgas. Of all outback travel only the back of the Hamersly Ranges counts as more beautiful.

That track........has claimed many a traveller, if you time your trip at a "bad" time....ie rough/corrugated etc.........best of luck. Done it 3 times, last 2, rang around getting road reports first. As far as "sights" etc, enroute, slim pickings there too.
