G'day boils and goils. Here we have a window. Not just any window but PJ's window, and a window that won't wind out. The first pic is to show you the style of window from the outside...
And here's what it looks like on the inside...
And now for the naughty bit that's buggered...
Is anyone one out there familiar with that type of winder? This one's gearing is worn, and it just goes around and around without catching. Is it possible to remove the plug in the center of the winder to remove the gear? Or split the vertical seam in the plastic housing attached to the wall to get to the innards? If not, it looks like a pro job with complete window removal, resealing, etc. Ta in advance.
Yes, I have Foss but I gather that ya gotta buy the whole window. I've got their step by step installation guide and it's quite a big job. My main concern with the window is not so much opening it but cleaning it. I can't reach the inside glass through the screen. Now I suppose someone's gonna suggest removing the screen. Hehe. But if I can get the winder handle to grip, I'd prefer that.
I can't quite see the mechanism that drives the window out,is it a solid arm? Is there a brand name at all?
I know many years ago Whitco sold solid arm winders that came left and right sided. Then like clever engineers do they decided to change the winding handle bit only and change the handle from spline drive to square drive. Maybe the winder is OK but the handle only is stripped At the spline. Try removing the handle only,I'm not sure but I think there is a slotted screw holding it on. If not a screw then it must just pull off,I'm not sure. once the handle is off grab a pair of vice grips and see if it opens.
Search for Whitco window winders and look for the old style replacement handles. Just a guess, hope I am right.this type of window winder is still made but rarely sold.
Thanks for all the tips and advice, fellow GNs. I think I'll try prising off the plastic cover on the handle first. Like Sue n Ray said there should be a screw in there that might lead to a quick fix or at least an indication of what's up. Nice to know there are cheap replacement parts out there.
The window is an Australite.
The hardware is basically crap.
You can not repair the winder, they are throw away.
It can be removed and replaced in about 10 minutes and are held in by screws that come into it from outside (under the seal if I remember correctly).
You also need to remove (and replace) the long skinny pop rivet at the end of the lever as the other end of lever is permanently attached to the inside of the winder box.
I replace at least one every year on the OKA.
thanks, Peter. I discovered today that the handle is not designed to be "user serviceable" - throw away as you put it. I'm finding it a bit hard to follow your instructions so maybe I should leave it to a pro. Pity you're not passing through Taree hehe.
it seems the handle has a clutch in it to protect the window winder mechanism. Your problem may only be the handle. Instructions here also on how to remove it.
hope that helps
frank
