Oodnadatta track

I am looking for local Knowledge, at the moment the road from Coober Pedy to Oodnadatta is open as is the track from there to William creek open for 4x4s. But from William creek to Marree its closed. There has not been any rain now for 2 days, does any one experienced in this part of our great land, have any idea on passed events, if the road would be open in 2 days time? Iknow how long is a piece of string, but going on past experiences.

Where do you want to drive? Are you prepared to sit somewhere and wait for a while?
First opening is likely to be for 4WD, under 3T and no towing, but it was recently closed for weeks and there were some big thunderstorms recently.
All the gravel roads in the Flinders were closed for a few days, but are open again, so that is a good sign.
What are you driving?
Cheers,
Peter

A few years ago we went down the Oodnadatta track, after the Great Central Road tour back to the civilised East!

The top 120km is rough stones*. Twice we passed the same Toyota passing us at +130kph replacing their destroyed tyres. We were doing about 40 kph,... & Lost none.

Recently on ABC Radio National there was a great story of the vast extent of current lack of across main roads in the region.

* We broke another roof rack support (since then, 5083 & 316 structural upgrades), but due to previous experience, we had all the tools & spares needed... Wify appreciated in spades!!!

Anyway, apparently the current weather situation it "better" from a photographic situation. But the the the 1970... so go for broke!

Yes they will, but they will not be able to tell you when the roads will be open and you need to wait until the Department of Infrastructure and Transport publish the revised advice here...  https://dit.sa.gov.au/outbackroads

Cheers,

Peter

William Creek to Marree is still only 4*4 under 3 tonne no towing. Bore Field road is closed for reassessment later today. Check the site Peter put up. This is the best resource for that area. And please follow their restrictions as unauthorised access and towing causes damage to the road for other users.

Be aware also that driving on these roads illegally will attract significant fines.

It is a shame that the OP has not seen fit to acknowledge the responses here or answer any or the relevant questions asked.
In fact, he has not returned here since asking his questions almost 5 days ago.
Cheers,
Peter

Thank you to all replied, I am a bit late in replying. Yes it was wait and see, strange the road sign in William Creek said the road to Marree was open, but main roads stated no to all traffic.

I was mainly asking, if after 4 days of no rain in past experience what was the possibility of the road opening. Any way all good it opened a few days later. As for the state of the track, considering the rain it was actually in good order, and yes we had one moron in a  yellow striped work vehicle fly past us at warp knots throwing rocks in every direction, sadly I did not get the name of the company.

In 2019 we came down the track. The top 100km or so is a pretty rough a rock strewn "road."

We were going down the road at about 40kph... save the car, us & appreciate the scenery, what is the point otherwise!?

A Toyota with tyres larger than the car flew past us throwing stones everywhere.

Anyway, about 10 minutes later we passed them as they were replacing a destroyed tyre.

10 minutes later they flew past us again at about 130kph. We found a place to camp for the night, so not sure how many tyres they destroyed!

Hope they have very deep pockets! /;

We had the same situation on the Gibb River Road.

Too many ruZZian toilet stealers in the world!
