Like a lot of people I was used to the old app. But I read somewhere that the people who started WIkicamps didn't ever expect the sort of growth and popularity that it achieved, and hadn't designed its architecture to support that. When G'Day bought it they found it unstable and fragile, and any attempt to make changes caused problems and instability. I have no proof of that, but it sounds plausible to me.
The thing that always worried me about WC was its long-term viability under the one-time payment model. How can you support the back end just from selling the app to new subscribers? Means the app is some sort of Ponzi scheme? To their credit, G'day have not gutted the app of free camps, and the new version is a lot more responsive. They have responded positively to requests to bring back features they removed.
I still have the old app on one device, but it's slow performance compared to the new app on other devices is a pain.
I am happy with it as well. The Windows version is now quite different from the Android version (and I assume iOS as well), and it looks like that is not going to be updated any more. Apart from the differences, I think the Android version is improved over the Windows version.
A shame because using Windows for trip planning is my preference.
Their income stream will be the new booking option. In fact getting a one-off payment for the app so they then make money on bookings is a bit cheeky. Not on the Windows version, and I would not be using it anyway. I prefer to cut out any booking agencies.
Apparently you can use the Android version on Windows using an Android emulator. i have not done this myself just yet, but I have considered it and may do so at some stage.
Yes Bristte it can work using an Android emulator to run the Android version. I have it successfully working using Bluestacks. Bluestacks is free with unobtusive ads on the side which you can apparently turn off. I have not because they can be slid offscreen and help provide an income for the developers.
The only settings changes I made were to change resolution 1920 x 1080 and, using the Game Controls icons on the right, change the mouse wheel from scroll to zoom. There is a setting to create a Wikicamps icon on the desktop. Click that and it loads Bluestacks, which then loads Wikicamps.
I have only fiddled with it a little, not fully tested, but so far no real issues. It works but just a little glitchy. Maybe I will try another emulator at some stage. For now the Windows version will do.
I am using Window 10 but it should also work on 11.
