Karumba - beaut spot, lots of wide ocean views great if you're a fisherman, bit empty otherwise. Visually great sunset colours for photos
Don't get sucked in by TV shows where the van parks have all sorts of specials ... we found that they only do that for a very short tourist season, so once the peak season fades, so do the specials (eg: scones & jam morning teas, evening entertainment etc)
Normanton - good sized outback town - couple of good supermarkets, plenty of fuel (but all food prices double Mt Isa prices for example)
If you time your travel to Wednesday, jump on the Gulflander train to Croyden, stay o'nite in the pub, back to Normanton next day. A "great little trip inside a big trip". Your rig is securely locked in their yards while you're on the train
With regards to the Gulflander trip from Normanton to Croydon. When we were up there a few years back, we travelled from Normanton to Croydon on the train, had a pub lunch then returned that afternoon on the Trans North Bus. We did, however, have to book 10 days in advance to get seats (2) on the bus back. We booked the trips through a tourist information centre whilst we were still on the Atherton Tablelands and took a leisurely drive over to Normanton and had a good look around Croydon on the way over. We did a few nights free camping at Normanton and a couple nights in a CP and also stayed at a caravan park at Karumba. The free camping was to relax before continuing south. Then, to stay at the free camp, you had to get a pass to display on your windscreen from the Normanton Tourist Information Centre and it was first in, best dressed and the passes where limited. We also did the drive out to the Burke and Wills camp 119. We don't fish either. There was a short railmotor trip also from the Normanton station. Cheers.
PS: We also had a look at the Barramundi Discovery Centre at Kurumba and went to their Sunday Markets (one Sunday each month - small but nice)

Would anyone been on there lately.
Im not worries about driving my old Ford on the dirt, but not one that is really rough.
