GVM Upgrade


I'd like to get a GVM upgrade on my single axle Golf caravan, hopefully get another 200kg.Has anyone had any experience with this ? What is involved ? Can someone recommend a company or engineer in Melbourne or Geelong that I could contact. Thanks Ian

 Its actually called an ATM upgrade Ian and Im still trying to find the Geelong contact that I have somewhere!

P.S In the meantime you might like to try Multidrive, in Bell Park. 03)5240 7150.

If they cant help perhaps they can point you in the right direction?

P.P.S You also could try JU Design, in Ballarat. Not TOO far from Werribee!

 Actually yobarr, I had an GVM upgrade in NSW, and it was exactly that. My tare of the van was 1107kg, and the GVM was 1200, the van was a 1993 model, and people had been overweighting it for 25 years. I didn't notice it when I first bought it, but when I did, I  had to have an GVM upgrade to be legally allowed to carry more then just water in the tank. So on my rego papers, it was indicated Tare and GVM only, ATM , was not indicated on my rego papers.

 Hi Ric. Briefly, ATM applies to towed vehicles, while GVM is used for motorised vehicles. Sometimes the term "GVM" is misused in the caravan industry.Details tomorrow, if I get time. Cheers

As posted earlier, some caravan manufacturers use the term GVM in reference to their vans, but GVM applies to motorised vehicles in this situation, and ATM is the term used in reference to towed vehicles. (Caravans) Cheers.

As Yobarr posted ... well, almost.

To add to Yobarr's post, there is no ATM field on the NSW registration document and no field for ATM within their system. So the GVM field is used to hold the GTM (weight limit on the wheels) not the ATM. Possibly other states are different.

I had a discussion (phone and email) with one of the technical officers in the RMS department responsible for these records. He confirmed that it was GTM to be recorded. I will pass on his contact details to those interested, but by PM, not here.

He sent me several documents and snippets from legislation but nothing definitively proved him right or wrong due to ambiguity.

I know some disagree and say it should be ATM recorded there, and many owners will have that. Mine shows the GTM and does not reference the ATM.

Here is an extract from that correspondence.

"Hi Stephen,

The Gross Vehicle Mass is recorded on the registration document, this is the maximum load imposed through the axles of a vehicle to the ground as designated by its manufacturer, In the case of a trailer this will be the Gross Trailer Mass and recorded in the GVM field on the registration document.

This is specified in NSW Legislation Road Transport ( Vehicle Registration ) Regulation 2017, link and Clause below,

15   Certificates of registration

(cf 2007 reg cl 15)

Transport for NSW must, on registering a registrable vehicle, issue the registered operator of the vehicle a certificate of registration that includes the following

(g)  the vehicles GVM (if applicable to the vehicle concerned),"

 

Another snippet from that email addresses another point often argued about .... Axle Group Rating and GTM.

"The axle group rating is its maximum load carrying capability as specified by its manufacturer ( not required to be on a trailer manufacturers plate ). The axle group rating has no relation to a trailers Gross Trailer Mass other than needing to be equal to or higher than the Gross Trailer Mass."

(Addressing a hypothetical question I posed) "A four tonne rated axle group may be able to be fitted to a 1 tonne trailer, However the maximum Gross and Aggregate Trailer Mass will be determined by other components such as the structural integrity of the trailers body/chassis, brake type, the sum of the load rating of tyres fitted, safety chain and coupling load rating."
