Do you use a silicone or non stick parchment liner or none. we have both but tend to use the parchment mostly.

No, it isn't a stupid instruction. The air fryer basket has significant thermal mass and will take X minutes to be raised to the cooking temperature. If you do not do preheat it then the effective cooking time of your food is reduced.

Nothing. Much of the rationale of an air-fryer is that air should be free to circulate on all sides of the food, if you block off air flow to the base then the underside of the food may not cook as it should.

No! But it's an interesting concept :) Although I suspect you would end up with dried out cardboard.
