2 sets of jumper leads

A very rare event these days.

 

Walking through Chatswood (Sydney) today & noticed a car broken down with flat battery. Another car owner was there just getting his jumper leads out of the boot. Both owners each had a set of jumper lead.

 

A bit different to our street where I am regularly asked to jumpstart cars as no one has a set. Started some cars multiple times.

Ditto here no-one seems to carry any more as modern cars computer electronics are easily damaged.

It's interesting that Land Rovers are stuffed full of electronics beyond reason 180 amp (210 if you have cold climate pack) alternator to run it all & CANbus system yet in the car's handbook it shows how to jumpstart a car.

I stopped using leads and went over to the small lithium jump starters, which have come in extremely handy over the past three years. All of our family head to remote locations alone, so these jump starters don't mean you have to rely on help from others. Mine has been used offshore too, assisting boaties with flat batteries. Even the marine rescue carry them as they are simple to just past over to the most common breakdowns we get. Theres also the fact you can use these anywhere without having to get another vehicle parked close enough for the leads to reach, such as a busy shopping carpark etc.

Has anyone actually damaged their high tech snsitive vehicle by helping someone doing a jump start, or is this just internet rumour that it can happen? If you follow procedure is it safe?
