Territory (The Car , not the Place!)


Does anyone have experience/advise re using a (petrol) AWD Territory for extended trips? Towing 1000kg rig plus load. Ta - Rob.

Welcome to GN's Rob.

I don't know much about Ford Territory other than SIL owned one that she believed was a very comfortable ride (she drove about 60 -80 klms a day for work).
I believe the powerplant was a derivative of the Falcon motor, so it should have the power to handle your trailer.

My sister had a Territory, she said it was a dreadful car, it fell apart. The only thing she towed was a trailer to the tip. She replaced it with a Land Rover Evoque which she has now had for a decade & very happy. It is basically a Freelander that I have, which was designed by Ford when they owned Land Rover. My car has the Ford 2.0L ecoboost petrol engine. I bought it in 2014. So Ford can design some good cars!

Some one asks for advice on extended towing tips, preferably from folk who have actually owned/own said vehicle.

What advice does he actually get so far?

It depends on what engine in the Territory you're talking about.
The first few models had the same 4 litre Barra engine in them as what was in the Falcon.
I had a BA Falcon with the 4 litre Barra engine in it.
It pulled our half cabin boat full of camping gear & trailer (1,300kg ) with ease & wasn't too thirsty.
My son has a diesel Territory & loves it, he tows a 1,600kg caravan with no problems.

I drove a mates, which pulled a 4 metre tinny no issues at all. It was comfortable and roomy, plenty of go. He only sold to buy a camper van.

I owned a 2015 automatic diesel Territory. It had a towing capacity of 2,300 kgs. It towed my 19', 1,850 kg caravan with ease. I never once had any stability / swaying issues when towing the van with the Territory but when towing the same van with a 3.6 litre Commodore that had a 2,100 kg towing limit, the van was prone to minor swaying.

How can you have experience or give advice about a Territory if you haven't actually owned one?

We had a Petrol Territory for several years towing everywhere and NO problems at all, excellent car

We have owned petrol RWD Territories for over 11 years towing for half that time. Never had a breakdown and been an excellent tow vehicle at a low price compared to Toyota etc.
If you buy one, buy the b est one you can afford and get a mechanical inspection by a mechanic familiar with the Territory.
They are easy to service (I'm 79 and do all my repairs) and parts are cheap and readily available.
They sold about 180,000 of them so most mechanics are familiar with them.

Not obvious at all; My initial answer to OP clarified my lack of ownership. I suggest you re-enroll in an English class and pay particular attention to "comprehension" lessons.

I did welcome the OP to the GN's and advise what and how I had knowledge that may assist and directed to a renowned Automotive Engineer with experience in RVs.

Hi RobUppy, welcome.

I did not know the petrol version was available in AWD.

I have the AWD territory in Diesel and according to manufacturer's specs is rated at 2.7T towing.

I towed a tandem pop-top of 1.9T (ATM) around Australia (literally) plus more, about 50 thousand klms. Never had any problems mechanically or with towing, very smooth at 90-95klm. Averaged 14lt per 100klm.

Now tow a full tandem caravan at 2.5T and average around 16-17lt per 100klms at a cruising speed of 90klm.

Very quiet vehicle, smooth and gutsy 2.7lt V6 engine.

Mine is the 2013 model.

Cannot say anything adverse about the vehicle. Other owners I have spoken to on the road towing have said the same.

What a great towing car had 5 in total,both petrol and diesel 2wd and awd,towed our van 20ft to the west from central coast vic,sa,qld also diesel is pick but petrol great also especially if 6 speed.only reason I don't still have one ford stopped making them I avg about 100,000 k's over 3 years each one was work vechicle also,no major problems just normal wear and tear also always did oil etc,every 10000,k's good eccomany both towing and not ,I would still have one if still making them especially if fitted with the diesel .Very comfortable also you should have no problems .Mike g

I have been a Ford Forums moderator since back in the 90s . The 4.0 is a torque machine for its size . Its bore and stroke of nearly 4 gives it plenty of low rpm torque . Two things I would look into is the front ball joints and the heat exchanger on the transmission. If towing I would by pass the water heat exchanger and fit a air trans cooler . They dont really require the trans to heat up quickly or towing . Its more to do with fuel consumption the first 2klrs !! Great for towing due to tow bar being close to rear axle centreline . The diesel is no slug either . Its the same engine fitted to Land Rovers etc .
