Diesel heater problem..........help needed

We have a Webasto diesel heater installed a couple of months ago under a bench seat with a inlet for drawing air from inside in our MH.

Over a period of 2 nights we accidentally operated the heater with an obstruction in front of the intake vent.

The heater now works fine in every way, it turns on and heats and when turned off it turns off and goes through the cool down procedure as normal.

 

The problem is, that it appears to not have enough heat coming out of the vents and does not warm the MH like it did.

My thoughts are:

Carbon build up.

A faulty temp sensor located behind the seat.

If there is carbon build up has anyone ever dismantled a heater to clean and how is this done?

Traveling day today, off to Tuncurry NSW so I am hoping for a solution from your great collective of experience and knowledge.

There are lots of You tube videos on Diesel Heaters.  Faults Maintenance etc.

When you turn the heater on a high temperature setting, and its cold, does the fan speed increase to the max, as the heat output gets warmer.

If it does not, you could well have blockage in the input vent/tube ( or fan vanes in the heater) that is restricting the airflow, so the temperature sensor is keeping the heat down.

Has it generated any error codes?

As Peter mentions these heaters monitor for over temperature and restricting the airflow would cause that but the heater should cope or shutdown, I cannot see an obvious reason why damage should occur. I wonder if by chance a fuel fault has developed which is restricting output? Unlikely but possible. 

I never run mine overnight, it's hardly necessary in Australia, buy better bedding.

No error codes have shown themselves. The heater heats up but not to the set temp, fan blows as usual.

Could the temporary blockage have caused carbon build up?

I would not have thought so. Combustion chamber air and exhaust is separate from heating air so even if the unit was running hot it would simply reduce its burn rate but stay within its minimum parameters which should exclude any possibility of carbon build up.

Are you sure you are not imagining a problem? Easy to do in such circumstances.

Ok, this where I could tell you all that a goat ate my homework or I can own it.

So here goes:

The heater is situated under the dining bench seat, hard to access, so I wanted to get some guidance before I pulled the heater apart and cleaned the excess carbon.

After spotting the blocked inlet I assumed the worse so I went down that road not looking forward to the really tricky job ahead.

After opening up the bench seat all became very clear to me.

After a very rough road trip from Bathhurst to Newcastle on back roads with the biggest potholes ever, the Motorhome got one hell of a shake up.

Turns out that just about every flexible pipe connected to the heater had come adrift.

All tighten up now and the heater is working 100%.

So thanks to all for the help and advice.

Note: I can still use the goat excuse at a later date.

Great  outcome.......always good to hear about a simple successful "problem fix" - hope you tightened and supported  everything so it does not happen again......  Long live Diesel Heaters.....!!    KB

Happens often because those pipes do not compress no matter how you tighten the hose clamps I cut a 20mm long slit in the pipe to allow a bit of movement and that solved the problem

Hi Yellow Van, welcome to the forum. The issue with setting the temp has been brought up previously and the answer seems to be you can't, most just set it to lowest setting and open a window.
To post a new topic, there is a panel on the top right hand side, just under calendar, "start a new topic". Ian

On the forum Home page click on the appropriate sub forum heading (e.g. Techie's corner"). On the right hand side there should be a button Start a New Topic. Some forums don't allow new members to post for a while as this helps to stop spam. Not sure if Grey Nomads has this feature.

To answer your question about the controller, do you have the one with coloured graphics of the heater components? Here are the notes I made:

 

Operation

Status

Press OK to cycle through the options

Current temperature

Target temp (large degrees symbol) change if required with up/down arrows

Battery voltage

Error code log

Time

Prime the device

Press OK and down arrow together

H Of displays (pump off)

Press Up arrow to turn on (pump light turns on)

Auto turns itself off after a while or turn off with down arrow

Starting

 

Press Power button

Animations display

Fans come on slowly

Fuel pump comes on after delayed start

Ignites

Bars increase as furnace temp increases

Turn off

Squeeze power button

Off flashes

Displays glo-plug symbol

Pump switches off after a delay

Takes about 10 minutes to totally shut down

Pair the remote

Press and hold UP and OK for 3 seconds

Screen will show HFA

Press UP to match the machine??? (It will pair?)

It will reboot.
