Hi Craig, whilst I have the utmost respect for the athletes skill and their work ethic, I find that I just can't get excited over these games. Maybe it's an age thing I will be 85 in August. There was a time when I would have been glued to the box, but now, quite frankly I find it all a bit boring so I will stick to my passion, classical music.

Just airing my views so please no brick bats!!

I find the medias obsession with GOLD a little annoying.
Win Silver or Bronze & you're not really in the ball game.
All competitors & medal winners should be fully appreciated for the training they have done just to be there.
Maybe I'm biased because I was a long distance & marathon runner who competed in Victorian State events.
I also think that our media place too much expectation on the shoulders of our athletes.
If they don't achieve GOLD they are sort of classed as a failure.

Sport gets media attention, but international competitions with actual useful skills gets no attention & Australia does pretty well.

Thanks for your message Mike. Beginning to feel my age a bit now, a few aches and pains creeping in but I am grateful for the good run I have had with my health.

Good Pommy Fenland stock!!!!!!!

Must be few £10 Poms on here.
I was born in Bromsgrove a suburb of Birmingham.
Came over in 1956 on the P&O ship the Strathaird.
I noticed that the marathon went past the Cadbury's factory in Bourneville not far from Bromsgrove.

The village of Bournville was a model village built by the Cadbury family for its employees. I understand the Cadbury family were Quakers and so there was no alcohol allowed in the village. They named their famous cocoa drink after it.

Sorry to go off topic Doug.  biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

Edit: it was so long ago that I thought I should check that song out, I had a mind it was Fenland but it's seems The Singing Postman was from Suffolk so a bit of a Southerner for we Fen boys.

86GTS.

I feel that I should point out in the interests of accuracy, that we were not ten pounders, we paid our way out. (vbg)

I should add that there is no disrespect to those who did avail themselves of the opportunity.

Watching the current games I still find myself supporting my country of birth if there are no Australian competitors in that particular event.

Your bringing back memories Mike

The Singing Postman Hev Yew Gotta Loight Boy Lyrics

I had a girl, really nice girl, down in Wroxham Way,
She were wholly nice to me back in the old school days,
She would smile all the while, but Daddy didn't know all,
What she used to say to me behind the garden wall.
"Have you got a light boy? Have you got a light?"

Then one day, she went away, I don't see her no more,
Till by chance I see her down along the Mundesley shore,
She was there, twice as fair. Would she now be true?
So when she sees me passing by, she say, "I'm glad that's you!
Have you got a light boy, have you got a light?"

Molly Windley, she smokes like a chimley,
But she's my little nicotine girl.

Now you'll see, her and me, never more to part,
We would wander hand in hand together in the dark,
The one night I held her tight, in the old back yard,
But when I tried to hold her close,
She say, "Now hold you hard!"
Have you got a light boy, have you got a light?"

Molly Windley, she smokes like a chimley,
But she's my little nicotine girl.

By and by, we decide, on the wedding day,
So we toddles off to church to hear the preacher say,
"Do you now take this vow, to honour all the time?"
Before I had the chance to stop her, she begins to pine.
"Have you got a light boy, have you got a light?"

Molly Windley, she smokes like a chimley,
But she's my little nicotine girl.

Now the doctor tells me a daddy I will be,
So when I ask him, "What's the score?"
He say there's only three,
So here I go, cheerio, to see how she do fare,
I know what she will say to me as soon as I get there

"Have you got a light ..... boy."

I think it's most interesting when the medal tally is viewed on a per capita basis. New Zealand usually scores near the top, as it does in the Olympics.

Back on Track,

Another great day in the pool

Pole vaultin miss, ms or mrs does well, scary to me being high as a kite relying on a fibreglass pole.

Our Mullet man mixed with some of the best and was not disgraced in 100m running

Sounds like you had an amazing day! Being in the pool can be so refreshing and enjoyable. Pole vaulting must be quite an adrenaline rush, but I can imagine it can also be a bit scary being up high and relying on a fiberglass pole. It takes a lot of skill and courage to excel in that sport.

It's great to hear that Mullet man had a chance to compete alongside some of the best athletes and didn't disappoint in the 100m race. Running at high speed requires dedication and training, and it's always impressive to see athletes pushing themselves to achieve their best.

Keep up the good work and enjoy the excitement of your athletic endeavors!

Something more useful the sport & Australia does well well.

' Like the Olympics, WorldSkills Australia competition activity begins at grass roots level, in competitions held in one of 34 regions around Australia. Competitors are able to progress to competing at national and international levels, in front of over 200,000 people. That's gold!

More than 50 trades and skills from seven skill clusters are represented at a WorldSkills competition. Learn more about competition skills.

Competitions are designed by industry and skills experts who assess an individual's knowledge, practical competence and employability skills against a set of strict criteria. '
