I don't have either but have seen many of both types you ask about, mainly the 'Rock Tamer'. People I have spoken to like what they have but a few with the Stone Stomper feel they should have gone Rock Tamer. Me, I would go Rock Tamer if I was to get something. I nearly did actually but didn't want to add the extra weight.

I think it is stone stomper i have now, the one with shade cloth type of stuff between car and caravan. Tried both and stone stmper takes dust erc under van and stops all the swirtling behind tow vehicle. Had mine for about 18 years and still going fine. All the others finally got dumped.
Personally I believe the Stone Stomper is far more effective, I have never had the other type but have travelled with people that have "had" rock tamer types!
SS not only protect the front of your van, they also protect your A frame frome damage, more so than the other RockTamer types
My suggestion, just walk around your local caravan park and ask, I have absolutely NO doubt, most, will give the SS a BIG tick.
The back up service from SS is second to none, again check with others also.
Iam yet to hear of anyone wishing they had the RockTamer after owning a SS, I have had 2 over 2 vans and travelled a "lot" of offroad/dirt roads over the last 10yrs(since owning/using a SS)

Do you really need one? Or is it just hype? Lotsa stuff carried around that is never used.
They look tough, that's all that matters, even on rigs that never leave the bitumen.

It does not matter what you call them or use, just so long as stones and rocks are prevented from impacting the front of your van if using gravel roads. I have seen fronts of vans/campers destroyed by stones when some sort of guard, "mud" flaps or whatever could have prevented the damage - paint or a few pings will not hurt but when whole panels , plastic annex pole holders, gas pipes , brake pipes are blasted away something has to be done.....I have seen it all happen. Higher "off road" type of vans are less prone but not always completely exempt from this damage. KB

Yep, stop stones hitting the checker plate, ( spend heaps to do this) that is put there to prevent damage to the van. Mmmm
If it has "checker plate" (which is actually a flooring - non slip- product , no stronger or tougher than smooth - and checker plate is a mongrel to clean , plain aluminium is a lot easier) KB
Trampolines just bounce everything back forward, destroying paint and rear windows.
Mud flaps on the van don't go high enough and mud flaps on the car scrape and flick up everything from the hump on the road between the tyre tracks.
I have a stone stomper to protect both the van and to protect rear of the car.
Now on my third SS.
The first was completely abraded on the Birdsville Tk from Maree to Isa.
The second wore out mostly on the Old Savannah Way from Ngukur to Normanton but by the time we were back from Cape York it too was gone.
Christian from SS had them replaced for free.
During those trips we came across many with smashed car rear windows, destroyed paint on their car and vans with busted front windows and panels peppered with stone dents right up to the roof line.
Up until our current car, I made my own stone deflectors. The D-Max has deep rear mudflaps - I may reinforce them if required.
The last one on our Patrol resembled a Rock Tamer without the expense, using 4 replaceable, heavy duty mudflaps from Supercheap. My only complaint as I could have used lighter steel.
Previously I made a shade cloth barrier on both my tent trailer & Jayco Eagle - they both saved the back of my vehicles, judging by the stones I found trapped in the not tight cloth.
