Heading South

We are leaving Cairns on Monday heading south. I welcome any info  on how busy parks are. Townsville for a few days, Bowen and then to Collinsville. Nebo next stop and then on to Gladstone. I am loathe to book in advance with so many variables happening! Happy to free camp too. Thanks!

Howdy Chappy,

As a part time Townsvillian I reckon Coral Coast CVP near the airport is probably as good as they come. Don't let the airport put you off or a few trucks as the sites are in the middle of the that park. In fact, it can get exciting for a visitor if the AAF send a few toys up for a play as they share the airport. I personally don't stay there as my Aluminium tent stays on the driveway at my daughters. I did stay there in the beginning though. Bowen's Queens Beach Tourist Village isn't too bad either. Keep in mid though as your are approaching their main tourist season so will be on the other side of cheap.

Keep Safe out there.

Last year we stayed at the  "Stay Awhile" Nebo CP. Not the prettiest of caravan parks but the amenities were clean, the water was hot, and at $10 cash per night for a powered site we were happy to stay an extra night. If I remember correctly the CP was for sale. We didn't stay at Gladstone but spent a night at Awoonga Dam CP (30k from Gladstone) and a couple nights at the free camp at Benaraby (23k south of Gladstone). It's been a few years (2019) since we stayed at Townsville but when there we stayed a night at a CP and a night free camping. In all of our years travelling we have never booked ahead and mostly we travel for a couple months during the months May/June/July. Never had a problem finding a place to stay. We are happy to free/donation camp, stay at showgrounds, use caravan parks etc. Whatever is available where we are at. Enjoy your trip. Cheers.

One of our fav stops is Balls Bay . Quiet and out of the way . Good place to rest for a few days . Right on the beach . Was free at the time . Showers, toilet, outside sink and water, black water drop also .

X4 for Queeen's beach.  But I don't know about the CP.

My Niece lives in a double story house with pool just up the road on The Esplanade.

A beautiful place to stay & enjoy the view across the bay from her patio.   Not forgetting her fabulous pizzas (she did a pizza cooking class when on a visit to Italy & has a woodfired oven in the back yard).   They always have a freezer full of crayfish & one of her Daughters is a Chef too.  With a husband who was once a professional diver there is never a shortage of prime reef fish.

Makes you wonder why I am languishing in the 'burbs of Brisbane. Hey?

Love, understanding & kind words  ... LOL

ps .. On one visit we (I) ran out of red late at night.   Off she went & came back with an interesting one ..  "Baz Luhrmann (who rented their house during the filming of Australia) left this behind.  Don't know how good it is  .. has been here for a few years"!

Dougwe .. That was a great visit.  Hurry back.  Always welcome to park up in the driveway
