Most of you probably know this, but I only found out about it a few days ago. A friend of mine, Chris, was selling a 2nd-hand car sight-unseen to someone in a different town and was reluctant to give him his bank details. The fellow said that's ok, I have your phone number so I can pay for it using that. The fellow then paid $5 and asked Chris to confirm that it has been deposited. Chris checked and it was, so the fellow then paid the rest of the purchase price, just using Chris' phone number.
I set this up on my bank account today (I had a choice of using my phone number or my email address). So when I sell my Land Cruiser and my caravan, I can choose to just give them my phone number rather than my bank details.
Has anyone done this? Any comments on how well it works?
You set it up with your bank. My bank is Bendigo Bank and they call it PayID. I have a few accounts with them, so I nominated one of the accounts and linked the PayID to that account. So I give the buyer my phone number and they can use that to deposit the money into that account.
What I am not sure yet is what the buyer has to do with the phone number. Presumably they can use it in a similar way to what they would do if I had given them my BSB and account number.
Instead of my phone number, I could have set it up with my email address instead. I can't do both, I had to choose one or the other.
I have been thinking for a while to set this up, so this was a good reminder to do so. It took just a couple of minutes with online banking. My bank offers PayID via phone number or email address, but for some reason it would not do it with the phone number. Email address worked.
Update: I found out why mobile setup did not work (on ING). I must have done it in the past as it was already done. Now I can be paid by email or phone number to the same account. My Westpac account only supports PayID phone number and it would not let me use that same number. I suspect the OP must also have also set up a PayID in the past.

Personally we don't do any banking over the phone, most IT people all seem to say the same thing which is, that phone banking is just not as secure as your computer.

I resisted for years .. on the same basis, but a couple of years ago I put Net Bank on our phones & iPad. Wouldn't be without it. Just soo convenient.
These days I never go near a bank or use bPay or cash.
Still a bit reluctant to use the phone with EFTPOS though.
I'll have a look at Pay ID too & surprise the grandkids with my Techno smarts.
