Motorhome/campervan insurance in 2021-recommendations ?

Hi all,my first post here and looking forward to contributing to this great forum and particularly looking forward to hitting the road sometime in 2022 !

We're building a campervan based on a Hyundai Imax and looking for insurance on the road.Presently with NRMA who will only offer a low maximum agreed value, way lower than it would cost to replace the van ( even without the fitout !).I could go market value but don't relish the idea of haggling with an assessor if there is a total write off.

I've read the older threads on this topic but I feel they probably don't reflect the current state of play.

Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated,cheers

Ken Tame will insure at a value established by an independent valuation.
Cheers,
Peter

My Suggestion:
Join the Campervan & Motorhome Association (CMCA) they have to me great benefits, Magazine, Forum Advice, Get togethers with local Chapter members, CMCA Campsites, CMCA App similar to WikiCamps, Ken Tame Insurance available and Breakdown Insurance available.

Use the following organisation to get a value for insurance ( I have for our OZie built Campervan) will help with Ken Tame or CIL, definitely ask CIL for a quote they include Breakdown in their cover.

www.motorhomevaluations.com.au/

When your Campervan is finished ask NRMA for a competitive quote also.

Hi smile

Hmm sorry to cut into the Peter love in smile

I have just received my 'invitation to renew my insurance' from Ken Tane and the price has doubled. furious HMM ???

"YOUR KT INSURANCE RECREATIONAL VEHICLE INSURANCE POLICY. As you may be aware, Allianz Australia Insurance -- is the current Insurer of
your KT Insurance Pty Ltd -- policy. Going forward, KT Insurance has changed insurance provider. In accordance with your current contract of
insurance, -- we write to let you know that your renewal and any other policies taken commencing 1st July, 2021 will be underwritten by
The Hollard Insurance Company Pty Ltd"

Ken Tane was taken over some time back and the last price was higher too, but after a phone conversation it was reduced a bit. But they have, at a quick look, changed their insurance provider now and sent a couple of pages of changes to various conditions and policy options. Obviously the changes were not to my advantage even though I have not claimed on them in 7 years except for one windscreen replacement.

I guess i will be ringing around to see what is a good deal.disbelief Perhaps it still is good ?

My experience over two motorhomes is that the only two insurers that offer competitive policy conditions & price are CIL & KT (new name for Ken Tame). Whom ever quotes the best price gets my business. Both companies specialise in RV insurance.
Over the years I have tried other insurance companies without any success.

3 years ago we had a MAJOR claim with KT when the OKA rolled down a hill with no one on board.
The assessor knew what he was looking at and whole process was remarkably painless.
Cheers,
Peter

"we had a MAJOR claim with KT"
Might be a new ball game now with a different underwriter and probably their assessors......
I spoke to CIL and they sent me some forms requiring detail, photos of interior/exterior etc before insurance could be offered,np there, at least there will be no arguments in that direction compared to regular comprehensive insurance companies.
I do like the idea of getting a valuation as suggested by,yes,Peter above.I looked into that and I feel it would be great ammo in negotiating with assessors if the awful situation of a total write off happened.
"Hmm sorry to cut into the Peter love in " haha that's okay Jaahn drop by sometime,us Peter's are pretty generous people.

Anyone else with an alternative suggestion?
I'm guessing most members here are insured or is everyone insured with only CIL or KT ?

I understand that APIA and QBE cover Mh/Campervan Insurance, as I came across the company names on a forum sometime ago.

Me, I would not move away from the big 3, KTI, CIL and NRMA.

Hi smile

A follow-up to my statement about my KT insurance offer doubling this year. After a chat to the company I was pleased to see they had mis-described my last payment as a full year when it was only for 6 months. So that makes the new offer look a lot better and the increase for this year is only slight on the full year.

A happy camper again so I will be sticking with KT again. Easy to deal with on the phone too aww

Ken Tame will accept independent valuation.
Ken has retired but they are still one of the best options for motorhome/ campervan insurance.

CIL a good second option.

Another vote for Ken Tame
I had a total loss a few years ago and the process was very comforting considering that I lost everything I owned
Remember that a cheap insurance policy might end up being the most expensive contract that you have ever entered into
Insurance is only useful when you make a claim
Make sure that you read the PDS and then re-read it to ensure that you can live with the exclusions (ie the things that will cause your claim to be denied)
