Hi, you probably need to put a bit more information as to what you are travelling with/in and what you are looking for, caravan parks or free camping, Just a bit more info so people can help you out
For a starter, most small towns along the way have caravan parks, all safe, like Pimba/Woomera, Coober Pedy, Alice, Tennant Creek, Katherine etc, etc.
Are you planning any deviations off the main Stuart Highway, say into Uluru, or not??

Straight up the Stuart highway, camping area's abound.

Don't camp near towns, and pull off the road at night so you cant be seen by passers by, use common sense. smile

Thanks. We are travelling in a Jayco poptop caravan 7m. We are fairly new to this caravan life. We will be staying in caravan parks as we don't have solar etc. We have heard a few stories about rocks and bricks being thrown at caravan so we just wanted to get the heads up if this is still happening and any towns to particularly avoid. My wife will be doing a 3 or 4 day tour of the Uluru area. I will be staying with the caravan.

You won't have any problems, caravan parks all along the way in most towns and even some outback service stations have small parkup(caravan park with all amenities) areas at the back. All quite safe.
As far as bricks and rocks being thrown at your van, seriously, you have probably more chance of that happening back in your home town. Although it has happened over the years in some spots.
As far as your wife doing a tour at Uluru,(3-4days??) go and do it yourself, your van will be safe back in the park, just get out there and enjoy yourself man/woman!
You appeared quite concerned, probably expected if its your first big trip, but, trust us, once you get out there you will be wondering what you were worried about, this is not America(yet).

Hi bakerama, sorry this may be a little late but x2 on the good advice given.

As you are staying in caravan parks, use the facilities - you'll gain lots of info either readable or verbally about what is available "Up the Track". Most people are ready to share their experiences - good & bad, what to see, etc.
Pick your time to travel - weather & temperature wise.
Don't feel tempted to try out the Territory's speed limit - you may see the odd person doing it but they stop more often at fuel stations!

As you're worried about leaving your van, just ensure it is secure, nothing of value is left out for the opportunistic creeps - parks do offer more security. And I trust that both of enjoy Uluru!

Need phone reception for best use, has a planning facility built in to create a Trip plan and the 300k daily distance is easily accommodated the length of the Stuart H'way

Good luck finding camping grounds every 500ks ! Road houses would be the places to search for . Theres signs on main roads telling of next rest stops . You can stop overnight ? Some are reasonably off the main road . Some ! You dont know till you get there ! Wikicamps helps . Save travels . May require a gas BBQ ?
