Would it matter if Facebook disappeared from the face of the planet for ever?
I know I'm old but I do remember a time BF (Before Facebook) and people seemed happier than they do now, shops still sold things, factories still made things, crops still grew, we sent letters and/or e-mails or talked on the phone - life happened.
Why is Facebook there?

The outage did not affect me. Who needs FB and the other apps?
Yet you are a senior member of this forum. This must not be an "other app".
I'm referring to social media apps where you tell others what you had for dinner or take photos of what you are eating. FB and the like that my daughter uses all the time.

As nothing more than a general comment. I find it interesting how we change definitions to suit our own needs and perception. Social media is social media, photos of bacon and eggs aside!

If I understand you correctly then from a psychological perspective you are equating, say, this site with Facebook?
I suspect there is a PhD awaiting a capable study of why the above is not the case so I'll not try and fit it into a post here. What I do suggest is that people spend some time on Google Scholar searching with terms such as "Facebook addiction disorder", "Facebook reward algorithms", "Facebook mood manipulation" and similar.
I doubt 10% of users of this site spend in excess of eight hours per day using it - this is what a study of 600 users in Taiwan found which aligns with a similar study in Germany. And I also doubt reading it affects their mental health negatively in a way many studies of Facebook users have shown.
Then, of course, there are teenagers and Instragram (a Facebook owned company) and, not content with that, Facebook are now trying to hook children under 13 into their grasp. The recent USA hearings in (un)social media I mentioned in a previous post are indicating how negatively these operations are impacting upon children.
Facebook revenue in 2020 = $86,000,000,000 - Grey Nomads revenue = $?? - probably just in the black.

Nothing more than this is a form of social media Michael, call it what you will.
Aside from that, I suggest nothing more.
By the way, unfortunately I do expect some have had aspects of their mental health affected by this forum, judging on comments at times over the years. Perhaps not to a dangerous extent, but certainly enough for them to feel the effects.

It all gets down to how you use it. I like to google search something and then see how long it takes facebook to start serving adds for the searched product.

A bit like altering Earth & Mars orbital trajectory to collide & see how quickly they come up with suggestions where you can buy the services.
