You could drive up to Malanda Falls, the road is very windy but an experience in itself. There are lakes up the with Bottom Breathers, not politicians, turtles!
Walk up the back of Bartle Frere mountain 1622m, a nice waterfall there.
We spent two weeks around Malanda area & could have spent longer.

Almost limitless list of things to do in that area.Kuranda railway winds its way through rainforest,and back on the skyrail, Armour and Artillery Museum with over 100 tanks on display from various countries,shooting range and various guns. Go on an Army Duck amphibious tank rainforest tour in an ex-army 6wd vehicle that then drives/floats out onto the lake,explore old mining towns like Herberton,Irvinebank,Chillagoe. Go to Mt Molloy,or out to Mt Mulligan where 75 workers lost their lives in a mine explosion,Sept 1921.Visit Daintree, and cross the river on the barge. Go up to Cooktown, all sealed road now,I think.Visit Port Douglas,very touristy and a few pretentious individuals,Mossman is real country town,sugar mill at Gordonvale,crocodiles, and that's just the start of the list.Great weather at this time of year,but only 27 today,I believe.Great part of the world.Cheers

Cairns local replying here. So much to see and do! Be open minded, talk to everyone you meet, van parks and national parks are often booked out. Free camps have sadly been used and abused to the limits. You can still swim in the ocean without the fear of jellyfish until the northerlies start blowing in around November. Be very aware of sal****er crocs in local rivers east of the Great Divide. West of the Divide there are freshwater crocs, usually no problem as they are so timid. Research and enjoy a beautiful place.
We visited Cairns about 5 weeks ago and the weather was great. Along with the places mentioned by others above we also visited;
* the chocolate farm and factory at Mission Beach. This had a great tour of the trellised cocoa trees, tree raising areas, processing areas, etc., followed by a delicious tasting of 12 different chocolates they produce.
* the Atherton Tablelands including the Crater Lakes National Park, and the giant Cathedral Fig Tree.
By the way we found that Cairns was very different to pre Covid Cairns. It was much less populated, having no International visitors. Many of the high class craft and souvenir shops and the International Designer shops were missing. "The Pier" shops were a ghost town. Most of the remaining shops were food and coffee shops. And everyone had an Australian accent! The Lagoon was great to sit around as there were 2 giant TVs showing the Olympics.
So true! Cairns tourism is totally dead. I have seen the Japanese come and go, the Chinese come and go , then the backpackers. Now no Aussies. A couple of months ago to supporting the locals we took our 4 grandies to Green Island. All of the hospitality staff were locals at 50 plus. Happy they had a job. Before only young backpackers were employed here.

If you take the last letter of the word "salt" and add the first three letters of the word "water",the word thus formed is perhaps unacceptable on a forum? Had you written "salt water" there would have been no problem,but seems the computer didn't like "sal****er".Cheers

All the northern beaches are worth a look and close to Cairns. Suburban Trinity Beach, Kewarra, Machans, Holloway, Clifton, Yorkeys. Palm Cove prob the most touristy (and expensive). Ellis Beach is my fave. Great caravan park on waterfront, tavern almost across the road. Just north of Ellis is a cute little cove with pebbles built up - Pirates of the Carribean used it as one of their sets.
