Can't for the life of me think of any dams around Rockhampton with camping. You may be thinking of Lake Awonga near Gladstone to the south. Further north there's Eungella Dam inland from Mackay and the Peter Faust Dam (Lake Proserpine) outside of Proserpine. North further & inland is the Burdekin Falls Dam southwest of Townsville.

There is a dam near Emerald west of Rockhampton. Great caravan Park and fishing and red claw

Waruma Dam, although not near Rockhampton was popular with nomads.

As usual those who abused the facilty ruined it for everyone, with many restrictions put in place.

Wuruma Dam,although low on water, had dozens of caravans parked alongside it when I was there a couple of weeks ago.The short way in is the better trip, but I left via the longer route.I chose,as usual,to leave them to it,and drove off to camp in the bush near Monto.Cheers

If you're using Rocky as the reference point, there's Awoonga (90 mins) and Fairbairn - Lake Maraboon (3 hrs). East side of Awoonga has a CP and is accessed off the Bruce around Benaraby, west side has a free camp (Boynedale Bush Camp) accessed off Gladstone-Monto Rd. Lake Maraboon is just south of Emerald and accessible from Gregory Hwy and has a CP. There are dozens of others but none I'd ever describe as near Rocky. Of you're interested in line fishing, be aware that a SIPS permit might apply (Lake Maraboon requires a SIPS permit.)
