HOW BUSY IS IT OUT WEST IN QUEENSLAND?

Hi all. Thinking of doing a trip out through Longreach, Birdsville up to Boulia and across to Charters etc originating in Mackay. Have heard that numbers out there are through the roof and wondering if anyone can see that they are starting to wane. I was hoping after school holidays and Big Red was over and prior to the Birdsville races it may be a bit quieter. Covid has really spoiled it for a quiet caravan trek west.

Cant assist with further north, but at the current time we are in Quilpie heading to Eromanga, and then back to Yowah and Thargomindah before heading home to Adelaide via Strzelecki Track.

On our way here over the past couple of weeks, parks have been full in Cobar, Bourke, Cunnamulla, Lightning Ridge, Roma, Charleville, and Quilpie. Every night. Emptying during the day and filling late afternoon. The smaller ones like Thargomindah, Eulo and the like are starting to see some spaces I think now

That said I think you will start to get some spots if you look to book a couple of days ahead of your arrival. That has worked for us with the last few spots including Eromanga. Free camps are also very full.

Friends have recently done a trip out that way, including Birdsville, Windorah, Quilpie, etc - chasing birds. We would have gone with them but for other more urgent commitments. They said there were caravans everywhere!

Bear in mind the "Tourist season for Western Qld" is from April to September - Covid or no Covid! After that the "southerners" think they'll melt in the areas' warm to warmer seasons. And yes, summer is TOO HOT!! And on the coast, they seem to have an adverse reaction to humidity, so those of us who live in the tropics can enjoy the rivers, streams, waterfalls without being swamped!
