Hi, I'm glad you asked as we are in the same position, we also are heading that way, from Adelaide, and was wondering also what the condition of the Buchanan Hwy is like from the Stuart Hwy across to Timber Creek. It would certainly save a bit of time. We have also travelled many times up and down the Stuart Hwy over the years and it would be nice to take a different route , if the road is reasonable. Thinking it won't be so busy as well? Like wise we are travelling with semi offroad van but would still like to know the condition first as we have not done that road before. Will sit back and wait!!! cheers Ian

Just rang the Motel at Top Springs, about half way along, and according to travellers coming through, no mention of being really bad at the moment, comments are along the lines of"a bit rocky in places". Quite a few vans have been passing by!
I will keep watching as our travel time approaches, hopefully someone will be able to give further info more up to date
cheers

Frankly, from my experience, other people's reports on gravel road conditions are absolutely useless, even if they travelled that road this morning.
ANY gravel road is a "shocker" to some. To others they can't remember because it was just like any other gravel road.
I would never NOT travel a road that was "open" due to someone else's report.
The only way is to go and have a look for yourself.
Cheers,
Peter
Thanks Peter, yes I am well aware that opinions vary from one traveller to another in regards to road conditions.
I agree with your statement 100%.

Well, covid stuffed that plan, due to WA restrictions for NT we elected to continue onto Mataranka and wait for border restrictions to ease. More to do at Mtaranka than Timber Creek! After 4 days waiting borders opened and travelling continued, sadly we missed doing the Buchanan Hwy. Will wait for another trip
Cheers
