Hi This is Ray from NZ.... at present touring NZ with Caravan and towing with an AWD, is a 2014 Rexton SSR, 2.7 L, 5 cylinder, 5 speed gear box Auto, with Low Ratio switch over (when stationary) a TeamMate model,
I'm looking for any feedback, the good, bad and ugly on these as planning to do 'a lap' of Australia starting next year.

Could I suggest that you tell the forum details of the caravan that you intend to tow. As you've titled this discussion Ssangyong Rexton AWD, I'm assuming you're either intending use this car here in Australia.
Also do a "Search, Advanced Search" on towing with awd cars.
In the "Techies" tab there is a sub section called "Weights & Measures" - have a read of the posts there so you understand the terms that affect us when we decide to tow a trailer, caravan as well as the legality of towing.
I could tell you what some of us did "in the good old days" - you might find some of those tales in the "I digress" tab, or in the "Humour" tab, but I don't think these tales would go down very well now.
I had a friend who has now passed on - he had a Mk 2 Ford Zephyr & twice did the input bearing in the gearbox, blaming the weakness of the gearbox. I now know why that bearing failed!! His wife insisted in taking the sewing machine, the ironing board, etc when they went away. Today I would ask, if my wife decided to take those items what I should leave behind. The food? Our clothing?
I know you'll get some good answers to your query - all we need are the details. Supply them & then enjoy your planning.

On the SsangYong....I may bring it as I know the vehicle......and it the end of of the day, practicality, reliability and costs will decide....so I have a safe reliable rig....... Cheers.. Ray
You would really need to check import costs and road worthy requirements. Sometimes it just isn't worth the cost compared to what you can buy in Australia. Cheers Stewart

You beat me to it Stewart.I had just finished writing a reply,but thought I'd first have a quick look at the thread! What you say is true,especially when the same car can be bought here for around $15,000.Not sure what shipping costs etc are now,but when I once took a Fairmont Ghia V8 to NZ, the shipping costs,import duties etc were ridiculous.Something more for Ray to consider.Cheers
Personal import comes with different rules ., Import permits are mandatory for all road vehicles imported to Australia. ... As long as you have lived overseas and owned your car for more than 12 months to be eligible under the Personal Import Scheme and you can only import one vehicle every 5 years.
I don't recall the actual date but all cars built since XXXX, (I think it's 1989), need to meet Australia ADRs. That's why you can't bring in a car from the USA built after XXXX without having it meet our ADRs. However you can bring in a bad car like a 1965 Mustang and drive it as is. Anyone say the laws an ass?
You can't bring a vehicle into Australia without doing all the paperwork first.
Caveat - We looked hard at importing a car and motorhome back from the USA. The cost was prohibitive. Sounds easy but by the time you get shipping, insurance, brokerage, quarantine and transport it's just not worth it. Old and classic cars are a different situation. Also keep in mind it has to fit in a standard container. Deck cargo is now almost impossible to get.
In my case it was ADRs ias in child restraint for seat ! I had to fit two little brackets in rear em window shelf for capsule ! Even tho Ill never use it ! In WRX I imported from
NZ . Get paper work done or they WONT off load your cargo !! Costing $1000s . Make sure body etc is CLEAN !! If its the same model sold here ?? ADR wont be a problem !

I believe that vehicle has a Mercedes diesel engine and transmission, either supplied by, or made under licence, and as used in various Mercedes commercials. That might make it a good combination for towing.
It would be worth looking at ones for sale here as they are not in great demand over here.
