This is an opportunity for travellers and locals to weigh their caravan and discuss safe towing with Officers from the Road Policing Unit.
This educational initiative is aimed at reducing road trauma in Far North Queensland.

Hi Possum...great to see the Police trying to help people with their weights.The best that these "weigh ins" can do,however,is alert caravanners to the fact that their caravan is over its GTM or ATM,or that their car is over its GVM or GCM.This is undoubtedly a good thing,but weight distribution within the van,and in the car,probably is equally important? And might I suggest that the vast majority of caravanners wouldn't have any clue what the various ratings are for their vehicles,or what they mean,let alone their car's rear axle carrying capacity,which is very easily exceeded on the vast majority of cars.And I wonder if the Police will check towball weight? Once again,I will say that the Police are to be commended for conducting this exercise,but for it to serve any useful purpose,there would need to be a team of experienced advisors on hand to explain to caravanners what is wrong,and how to fix it.Unfortunately,my many dealings with the Weights People over the years have shown me me that few have any real clue about weights.Often I have had heated "discussions" about my weights with these guys,and never have I been proven wrong,but always they have the last laugh by booking me for something trivial.Thanks again,Possum,for posting this...now we can only hope that large numbers people take advantage of the offer?
