Satellite Phone

Hi there, We will be buying a Sat phone in the near future for outback and big lapping adventures. We've done research and leaning towards Thuraya XT Lite. Anyone out there have one ? Your comments appreciated. Thankyou.

We have an Inmarsat Sat Phone suggest you don't get this phone as the rates to me are high. I would probably go with your choice if buying again. Or a second hand Iridium if you can still put you Telstra sim card in ( with roaming) for occasional calls.

Would also talking to the firm below:
satphonesales.com.au/

But do you really need a Sat phone, we have a mobile phone aerial on the roof of our landcruiser and a mobile phone aerial on top of the TV aerial in the caravan. Both can be connected to a Telstra blue tick phone with an aerial connection. Good signals in most places except the outback.

We also have an Inmarsat. Have used a couple of times. It replaces our Hf radio set (which by the way is for sale) which was used a fair bit and with Radio Telephone calls.

Only set it up (buy prepaid call lots a month at a time) for remote travel.

For a slow learner with such tech, it is easy to deal with.

Not sure of the call facility provider name, it came with the phone, but currently thinking about using a deal from an Adelaide firm - Electric Bug

MC I do not do the monthly prepaid or the voucher

However I understand you can with an Inmarsat Phone with no credit

You can make emergency calls. Still receive SMS and email messages from Family and Friends.

However like myself you MUST TRY OUT the SMS/Email/Receive calls prior to going on a trip to confirm these functions are still available, otherwise buy the prepaid.

Re switching Sim Providers, our phone had the Sim locked to the provider ( some providers in the early days did this) put another sim in, somehow mucked up the password the phone had to be sent to Germany at my cost to unlock it.
