"Both of our dogs died this morning due to ingesting 1080. Unknown to us our boy, Bear ate it and three hours later he died the most horrible death. He used his last bit of life to get to his bonded mate, Luna, where he died as my partner held him.
We didn't know what was going on. Luna seemed fine... until she wasn't. Three hours after we lost Bear, Luna started exhibiting symptoms. We rushed her to the vet, where her heart stopped three times. We got the call this morning that the fourth time her heart stopped she couldn't be revived.
We searched the yard and found one pile of vomit with little red beads in it. We searched and finally found the remnants of another vomit that had many, many more beads. We have determined that Bear ate the bait and Luna ate Bears vomit.
I never knew what 1080 was. I can't get our babies faces out of my mind. Contorted, terrified and in obvious pain. I woke up this morning thinking I heard the dogs playing and barking in the yard. My daughter woke up at the same time and said she thought she heard them too. I can't bring myself to shower in our bathroom because that's where I was when I heard Bears screams.
I am truly sorry for your loss, you must be totally heartbroken.
This isn't the time to talk about why 10-80 or any other baits are used generally - but if this occurred in a public area notify Local Council immediately and perhaps they can take emergency actions to prevent other poisonings.
What area was the baits distributed?

s 1080 poisonous to dogs?
These plants contain sodium fluoroacetate, which is synthetically produced under the name 1080. Native animals have evolved with these plants and have developed a tolerance to the poison. However it is lethal, even in tiny amounts, to introduced foxes and feral cats, as well as domestic cats and dogs. Dog owners need to be aware.
Did someone lob the baits over the fence, or were the dogs running wild, off leash?
"I woke up this morning thinking I heard the dogs playing and barking in the yard." Maybe someone didn't share your love of barking when they woke up in the morning? Methinks you're not telling us everything.
BTW, I lost my own dog to illness just a few weeks ago. It hurts.

I am very sorry for your loss of your loving animals. Our dog's are inside all night, and most of the day. I am up at 7am, and go out first and walk my half acre, before they are let out, as we have baiters in our little village all the time, yes towns people do it as well and fly by nighters, We also have dog thieves. If you drive around the village, you hardly see a dog in a yard, they are all inside, even if people are away. it is sad, but it must be done.
