We were in Kakadu 22 May 2018. Some of the side roads were still closed so we couldn't go everywhere. Had to be inside our enclosure by 5pm due to the 100 million mosquitoes.
I can't help with accom sorry. Until recently I had family in Darwin and have visited right throughout the year. By late April you should see a lot of attractions and venues opening again. Some possible activities depend on the length of the Wet and how long it takes to clear salties from popular spots. Darwin has a lot to offer but the real attraction to me is just a bit further out. Litchfield, Kakadu, Bitter Springs.
Welcome Mike. On the way up there are heaps of free camps. Old WW 2 airfields and off the Stuart Hwy there are still bits of original hey that you can camp overnight.
Tennant Creek, Katherine in town or at the Gorge, Edith Falls and in Darwin at the Showgrounds or The Palms at Berrimah. Good public transport into town. Also Howard Springs is good.
Don't stand near any water.

It will be very hot and humid especially this season as they are having a good wet season and could get worse as March and April are usually the wetter months.Another thing to think about is a lot of the national parks such as Kakadu,Litchfield,Katherine gorge,Elsie falls etc will take longer than normal to open up.
Having said that the wet season would be great to see all the rivers full and if your into fishing its the best time for Barra or a ride up Katherine gorge in flood.There are 3 parks not far from Darwin

We were in the Darwin area in April/May a few years ago. Some parts of Kakadu and a few other spots weren't yet open after the wet season. But what was open was more impressive than it is later in the dry season. The main advantage was far less crowds and places weren't booked out. It was still pretty hot and reasonably humid in April, in May the humidity did suddenly decrease a lot. For us its a definite Yes, prefer it to July when everything is packed.
There are several good parks around Darwin, if you want something close to the city would probably choose Free Spirit, further out Howard Springs.

We went to Darwin,Kakadu in May-April,couldn't believe it was just over 20 yrs.ago,we were tenting then.
It was hot and humid,but the water in Kakadu more than made up for the humidity.The waterfalls were spectacular worth doing a flight over the Kakadu escarpment.
We stayed at the Jabiru caravan park,Hardly anyone there then back then at that time of the year.At Darwin we lashed out on an apartment at Cullin bay.
We are in Darwin now and loving it, sure its wet and we can't go everywhere. We were in Litchfield National Park last week and camped at Florence Falls. A great spot at $6.20 per person with showers and toilets. Lots of walks and safe swimming places. The falls are spectacular this time of year. In Darwin we stayed at the Discovery Caravan Park which is close to the city and shopping centers and the cheapest at $32 a night. Its a big park with good facilities. In April all will be well maybe beat the rush. Litchfield National Park Internet site says no caravans at Florence Falls Camping ground but this has changed with a new area labeled 2wd camp that has big sites and plenty of room. We discussed this with the Ranger and he said the no vans rule applied to the 4wd site before the road was made. Wherever you go you will enjoy. Fogg Dam is worth a visit on the road to Kakadu.

Darwin will be more humid in April than May, but will only get better, and unless you really can't stand humidity its fine with aircond in cars, shops and caravans!
The only other issues at this time of year is that some Parks with swimming areas, waterfalls etc may not have reopened after the wet season. This is because NP Rangers spend time checking and removing any salties out of these areas that the crocs can access during wet seasons(quite normal), parts of Litchfield and Kakado Falls are effected and sometimes it takes a while for them check and then to remove the crocs.
