Petrol prices.... Here we ago again!!!!

Yes,  here we go again... Peak holiday and traveling time and you guessed it.

Petrol has jumped again. A Xmas bonus for the Government, or is it.

The way I understand it is that no matter the price, the excise duty on petrol is $0.423 per litre.

so the government still gains the $$$$ no matter the price.

Here is a thumb sketch about the fuel excise.

Excise tax rates

The excise tax on commonly used fuels in Australia as of February 2020: A$0.423 per litre on unleaded petrol fuel (including standard, blended (E10) and premium grades) A$0.423 per litre on diesel fuel (ultra-low sulphur/conventional)

Up here in Brisbane, our price was as low as just over the $1 about two weeks ago, and it zoomed up to over $1.50.

I must say that we always have full tanks in both vehicles at the low point of the cycle.

If in need at the higher price I just put in 10 to 20 litres until the price drops again.

But I notice heaps of cars at the servo filling up at $1.50 plus.

I am all for competition but talk about price-fixing. Every servo has virtually the same selling price on display within a day of the up and downs.

So why does the Government allow this type of retail trading??????

There I have had my bitch.

A$ is high. Barrel of oil is low. Gold Coast went from $1.039 to $1.499 in the space of an hour at every servo. Same ol same ol. Nothing will happen. Never does.

I find fuel saver apps like RACQ of great help.

eg .. While the average price in Brissy is around $1.40 currently, there are a few close to my place at $1.09 less the RACQ 4c discount at the closest.

But I too have full tanks plus a 20l can of premium for mowers etc in the shed.

These sort of thoughts used to give me ulcers. Then some years ago the adage "if you can't change it then why worry" came into play. I do understand the frustration however if you took a figure you'd be happy to pay say, $1.30 A litre then on average that's what you're paying. Same when I ran an LPG car, talk about fluctuating price per litre. But over the years it always reworked out close to 50% the price of petrol. So I now focus on what I can change like...less junk food :)

Boy, am I glad that I changed from a gas guzzling Nissan Pathfinder to a diesel Ford Ranger. It is interesting that diesel prices are very stable. No high and low cycles.

Why single out fuel companies for playing the supply and demand game. If you want to experience some real price gouging just stay in an East Coast caravan park during any holiday season. ( no, I don't ever, but obviously many do)

If petrol stations played by the caravan park rules you would have to buy a minimum of 150 litres at double the normal price.

Then their is GST added to the price of the fuel and the excise, so we are paying GST on the excise, which adds another 4.23 cents per litre, this is a tax on a tax. Mrs Kelly would not have let Ned and his brothers play with people like those in government  when they were kids as they were too dishonest.

Gee!! I had not thought of the C.Park and Holiday units etc in resort areas during peak holiday periods. You are so on the money there Tony.

As an aside, does anyone know if the Federal Government still has luxury tax on expensive imported motor vehicles. I think for example Mercedes Benz had a luxury tax which was introducted to hopefully to try to protect our local motor vehicle industry.

We now have no local industry, but is the luxury tax still in play??

I feel sorry for the people who live in the very remote areas, nothing less than $2.00L & often well over.

Same as me, got rid of my Pathy recently, and got a Suzuki AWD, cheapest car I have ever had. Premium at $1.30. 50 dollars to fill the car, and 650 km to the tank. Never had a car with as good economy, since my 850 Moke.
