Cats and heat in motorhome!

Hey everyone, I'm looking to prepare for the heat as soon as possible as i travel with my cat. Does anyone have any good tips to keep the motorhome cool in the summer months?

I was looking at getting some reflectix type materiel for the windows to make block out shades but not sure where to get this from.

Any advice welcomed!

There's a fellow/company in Queensland that makes custom shades for cars and vans, they've got layers with the reflectix stuff on the outside, they fit on with suction cups.  They have a lot of patterns for different vehicles but if they don't have yours they can do it from a pattern.  I was/still am thinking of getting some for my car.  I came across a bloke when I went up north who had a set on his car and I asked him if they were good and got a positive response.

Without active cooling, the inside of the motorhome is going to end up considerably hotter than outside regardless of how well insulated it is. Getting under dense shade of a big tree, external shading of all windows (including on the non-sun side) moving the mh so the rear faces the sun, all help, but heading south and up in altitude are the best way. Our cat spends hot days (36C today) under the bus

We use to travel with a cat

We had the solar screens (probably from the same people in the link)

They make them for different makes of vehicles, we have them for the windscreen, and both cab door windows
They are expensive but, far superior than off the shelf (normal single layer) solar screens, in stopping the heat

We always kept the top hatches open, and the house windows of the motorhome, (the cat could reach), not open enough for the cat to squeeze through

We kept the main motorhome door open, as our fly wire door, is also a security door, we also had fans

I think that the secret is to have plenty of air circulating, and plenty of water in the bowl, and the cat be allowed to walk around the motorhome

While driving we had the vehicle air-con going, so the front of the motorhome was reasonably cool, for when we went shopping

We rarely went into caravan parks, and when we did, we never mentioned the cat, as it always stayed in the motorhome, unless it was carried

One thing was mentioned to me, by another traveller, so I have no idea if it was actually true

In some caravan parks, when they know that you are out touring in your car, or walking/cycling, then will switch the electricity off, if they hear your air-con

So true Tony.

Its been said many times that people take their dogs with them, but owners of cats go with them!!

 Absolutely true, Chris & Sharyn

biggrinbiggrin If the cat does not quickly become the boss, there is something wrong with it, and should be taken to the vet, for a check-up biggrinbiggrin
