I hope to visit the Flinders Ranges in late August and would like to know if I could tow a van through Brachina Gorge from East to West ..out to the Leigh Creek road .
I have a 4x4 and van has reasonable clearance.
I was there 6 years ago with a camper trailer and rain caused a mass evacuation of all campers. The road was muddy. Any help on road conditions is appreciated
No problem at all, provided it is not wet. Check here.... dpti.sa.gov.au/OutbackRoads Brachina Gorge is one of the roads updated regularly. If it is green or blue it is good to go.
The road that comes south of Brachina Gorge (with the dog-leg in it) is the Bunyeroo Gorge Scenic Drive. Don't miss it. Best driven S to N.
I have now returned from my quick Flinders Ranges trip with my caravan. I camped at "Trezona " campground as I had doubts that my van could go through Brachina Gorge
Trezona is in 8 klms west from the main road up from Wilpena Pound. For a normal caravan this is as far as I would take it in as the road is quite coregatted. The rest of Brachina Gorge is only suited to an "off road " camper van or off road van. I saw camper trailers but no vans.
I did travel the Bunyeroo Gorge South to North in the 4x4 and it is a nice drive. Also I checked out the many camping grounds available and decided I would book only 1 or 2 days in any spot changing locations until I had made my way through.( Do look at the Ruins ...hard times in those days.) Go Late June to End of August... I found the Flinders quite dry In Mid Sept But this weekend 17th Sep > will change that.
Summing up. 2 wheel drive cars will get through if you have a bit of clearance. 4x4 and an off road trailer is fine. A road type caravan go to Trezona camp and explore from there.
Do do the Bunyeroo Gorge and see the RazorBack lookout .As Peter said South to North is best and the road will take you to Brachina Gorge
