Hello. After much deliberation (caravan or RV) I purchased a Mercedes SWB Sprinter yesterday.
I was surprised to learn that my usual insurer, RAC WA, does not insure RVs. I have taken out a policy with CIL. What other options are out there? Id value the input of forum members please.
Hi i have used Catholic insurance think its CCI for a 5th wheeler and also a caravan
saved a lot of money. I never made claimed so not sure how good they are at paying up
regards Chris
I have used both CIL and AIG (NRMA) - CIL have higher premiums but great when assessing and progressing claims. AIG lower premiums just don't quite walk the talk with claims (Pain in backside with "Approved" repairers). Which ever Company or Broker you use ensure you are aware of all the extra costs/excess fees with regards to Storm Damage or Hail Damage which is the most prevalent claim.

Usual disclaimer, I am not associated with anyone, selling anything
I also had the same problem with RAC WA, who I had been with, since I was a teenager
Something to do with the height/length/weight of what their tow trucks can carry
My research (around 2014), showed that Ken Tame (recommended by CMCA), and CIL were more or less neck and neck, on what they offered and price-wise
I opted to go with CIL, because I (rightly or wrongly), interpreted Ken Tame PDS (Product Disclosure Statement)
To mean, that if the driver was not a current paid up member of CMCA, the insurance on the RV was null and void
With CIL, last year I claimed for a storm damaged awning, this year I claimed for a front windscreen
As this was one more claim, than I had made with RAC, over a 52 year period, I can recommend CIL
In my opinion, there is no one insurance fits all, a person should really read the PDS, to see if what is offered, is suitable for them
I was with CIL. But a bit costly so have now been with WFI for a couple of years. Cover for travel and accommodation per heaps not quite as good, but unless your traveling most of the year should be ok. It's just about risk.
For what its worth I have two policies. RV Insurance with Ken Tame(Allianz) for many years which has been good, however I also have total Care with RACV. My vehicle is a Nissan Civilian weighing 4.8 t. with total Care they will assist me anywhere in Australia and tow my vehicle to the nearest repairer. If that repairer cannot fix it within 3 days then they will recover my vehicle to anywhere in Australia I request along with hire car and accommodation. Covers me for any eventuality. Too many limited restrictions and extra costs associated with using the limited recovery on insurance policies.
