Leaking kitchen tap. Camec or Coast?

After less than 3 years our kitchen tap is leaking under the sink. Contacted the workshop of the dealer and it was suggested the cheapest option is to replace the mixer tap. The original is Camec 220mm spout. The only alternative appears to be a Coast although that may need extra fittings. Is one brand better than the other? Anyone know? Thanks. Kent

Kent, My advice would be to remove the original and take it to a reputable plumbing supplies or Bunning's store. They would be able to match the fittings to original - most probably cheaper and better quality than caravan dealer.

Thanks Possum. That's what the guy from the workshop said as well. The 2 cheaper ones that Bunnings carries are both out of stock in my local store at present and the cartridge is 35mm not 40mm but I could take mine up there to see what extra fittings may be needed. cheers

Hi Jenkin.

Had a 2 problems with taps of late and found Reece Plumbing to be very helpful and prices very competitive.

The bathroom basin was just a pain to use as the tap's spout was in the road and replaced it with a swivel spout, now great being able to push the spout away to one side. The tap operation was noticeably smoother and better quality.

The kitchen one I replaced is in our home and once again surprised by smoother operation and both made in Queensland by Ram Tap Ware. PS the one in the kitchen was a fancy looking thing and just hated it and come with the new kitchen, overseas made thing.

My 2 experiences in the last 10 months have been great. Both taps were easy replacements, a basic tools kit, tube type socket was the only extra ordinary tool required.

Hope this is of some help.

Hard to say with out seeing the tap, but it is rare for the actual tap to leak. It is usually the connection to the tap. If it is the tap, removal is usually simple apart from access, and will be a fibro washer where the tap is maybe screwed together.

Any way my point is that seldom is the leak coming from where it appears and mostly from a connection or fitting. Always check especially if the tap has a plastic FM fitting to the tap. these are prone to splitting and are hard to see.

I often remove the pipe off the tap and plug it of with an old gas **** fitting that allows the air out if i want. 90% of the time it is the fitting. But once removed the tap itself can be checked.

Dry and check ....dry and check... a clear water tiny drip is hard to find.smile

Possum and Radar are right. I believe that Reece is a good option as you can get some professional advice from them about which mixer to buy. It is not always the best option to go for Bunnings cheapest mixer. You do not want to have another, similar problem in a couple of years.

Let me assure you, its cheaper and more reliable to replace a mixer tap, also dont be enchanted by talks of ceramic washers and stuff. Get one that fits from Bunnings and when it finally croakes it in five or six years (maybe), just replace.

The bathroom tap in my Jayco was leaking, back into the cupboard below.

The cause was a leaking seal, "O" ring in the tap body. A quick trip to the hardware store in Galargambone NSW, I was able to purchase a "kit" designed for that particular tap. Cost around $4.00, 10 minutes work and job done, successfully too.

Any of the larger Hardware stores will likely have repair kits as well. It is an easy fix, very simple.

Stay away from ceramic inserts.

Have never had to replace a tap in my life, until I installed three with inserts a few years back, two have already failed, and here's the rub, as logical as it may sound you cannot buy a new insert as you would a tap washer, have to buy a complete new tap.

Needless to say have converted back to old style taps with an easily replaceable washer.biggrin

Santa I have replaced all our taps by using ceramic inserts by Ram Taps. Never had a problem in the 9 - 10 years they have been in. I would never go back to washers.

Were yours made in China or somewhere else.

G'Day Bazz, same here, I used Ram Taps, we live in an old house with old plumbing, when I discussed the problem with our plumber he explained that any scale or other build up that flows through the tap has potential to damage the insert, once damaged its a case of game over.smile
