Doctors working with out proper PPE.

Supplies of face masks are in short supply, Doctors having to work without proper ppe, maybe everything was made in China. This will be a great wake up call, not to export our manufacturing base overseas.

A friend of my sister works as a nurse in a private hospital said they have 2 days of masks left. She was in tears over the whole situation & the government told the hospital to source their own supplies, they are looking after a couple of Coronavirus patients.

Absolutely! The sale of farms to the Chinese has always been of concern, but I decided that, while Australia still had control of its ports,we could at least ensure that we had control over how much of our farm produce was exported, and make sure that that there was enough food  for us all. Then the port at Darwin the was sold to...guess who. Cheers

I sincerely hope this will be a wake up call for all Australian people, including politicians and business people at all levels:

Get all you damned eggs out of the one basket!

Yes, it is cheap coming out of China, but don't forsake the product of your fellow Australians.

Tomorrow, I have a doctor's appointment here in Port Augusta. The surgery is in lockdown, but they are having "carpark" consultation. When we arrive, we ring them, they come out with paperwork to be completed, then the doctor comes out for the consultation. If and only if you need further medical attention (i.e. physical checkup) they will take you inside. In my case, I only need to get two script rewritten.

John, on the other hand, had a dental appointment today. No special precautions, except for the usual mask etc.....

Medical supplies to China from different countries, including Australia can be read on news.com.au as I have read it myself before coming on here.

Without getting political

It is a pity, that our leaders, are not leading

I have never been the brightest globe, in the knife and fork draw

But, I believe that our leaders should be able to see, what I can see

We know that there is a shortage of medical equipment, as well as hospital beds, all over the country
We also know, that there is a good chance, that we will need, what we are lacking at the moment

We also know, that there are now, plenty of unemployed

I will assume that there are plenty of unemployed people, smart enough, and also willing, to be taught how to make medical equipment

I also know for a fact, that any construction worker, worth their salt, could quickly knock up a temporary hospital building, using scaffold pipes, and tarpaulins

i also am not known to be one the shiniest tools in the shed it would seem the people making decisions should spend some time on social media (or get some of their underlings to) to find out what is going on in this country the story about the chinese sourcing medical goods from other countries has been around for weeks an it has taken it that long to reach the people who make decisions!
same as the cruise ships why can't they be sent to christmas island or the construction camp they spent millions on the deal with a few cases early in the piece

OK I'm going to upset a few here I'm afraid.

The problems isn't the Chinese. The problem is us. Yes us. We are the ones who are demanding cheaper and cheaper goods. We are the ones who complain when something is seemingly over priced. We are the ones buying cheaper cars, tvs, phones, computers, ........... etc etc etc etc. Us. Yes us. The Chinese are only filling the demand. Are they playing fair? Maybe, maybe not. But just like the fact that Australian's won't pick fruit we wont pay a cent more for anything. I like my lollies and ice cream/s. Pick up a bag of lollies and tell me where they are made. I bet they aren't made in Australia. Yet our lolly factories have closed. Buy an ice cream on a stick. Many come from overseas. How the hell they pay for them plus freight is beyond me. But they do. Why? Because us tight a#$#@ demand to get our lollies and ice creams cheaper and cheaper. Why hasn't Dick Smith still got his stuff on the supermarket shelves? Because you and I didn't buy his products. Why? Because they were more expensive.

The reality check is not with Australian industry or even the politicians. The industry and politicians are only reacting to what we are demanding.

So stop complaining because this crisis is, to a large degree, of our own doing. Yes and before anyone says the virus came from overseas let me remind you of our demand for cheaper and cheaper air fares. And cruise fares. I'm afraid we also want the government to spend money on this and that and then complain because they don't spend enough on health. And yet we complain about the taxes we hate paying to pay for the things we are demanding.

I'm cranky. I've just have an urgent operation cancelled for the 3rd time. I'm venting. But read the above a few times and tell me your not one of the people who insist on paying as little as possible for anything without reading on the label where it was made.

Now I'm off to put on my flame proof suit.

Bruce, you would not need a flame proof suit if I met you. This is an absolutely brilliant post, well written, and full of home-truths,and I would be busy shaking your hand, virus or no virus. What you say is totally and absolutely true. When I lived in Geelong, the Ford factory was nearby, with a carpark full of cars, but very few Fords. Then these people wonder why their jobs disappeared. No business can survive unless people are purchasing their product. Many people have an absolute inability to understand logic, and your post hits the nail squarely on the head.Again,congratulations.Cheers

What a pity it is that we cannot vent our spleen here, by that I mean this post is becoming political, but we should be allowed to discuss this, as I also agree 100% with what bgt wrote. We need to bring back import tariffs (just like China has in place against our exports), and resurrect our industry. I don't think we can even make uniforms for our defense force. Wake up Australia!

If you wish to sell property to overseas people, try selling under leasehold terms instead of freehold.
It would be much safer for the country if problems arose.
Shorter term lease also would be better, for non residents of this country, land bought should be short term lease only.
My thoughts only.
Pomme.

Yes I agree with leasehold properties to overseas people.

Lots spin from politicians and Senior public servants   ... they just said we have enough masks and PPE  ... what rubbish ... hear a completely different story health workers.

About the Chinese companies that send product over seas - one of the news article i read , said these companies need export approval via the minister.   The article implied this approval was not given.

Will be interesting to see if they are prosecuted.    I any case just image if foreigners did this in China.  People would be in prison I expect.
